Try to keep an open mind. Try calling them something else besides “rompers” if that’s too Lolita for you. Think of these as a refreshing alternative to the mini dress. They will give you the same Legs For Days, but with a decidedly new twist.
Rompers go in one of two directions: The first style is a girly, flirty fling perfect for pool-side and patio, al-fresco dinners and summer clubbing. These are mostly in sunshiny prints, with flounces and ruffles, and can be quite short.
The second style is a solid color, silky piece often with a 70’s vibe that just begs for sophisticated accessories and will transition beautifully into fall with layers & fall shoes. While the latter less playful romper is still definitely short, the inseams are generally longer than 3″ and the whole piece wears with a longer line.
So, what’ll it be for you? Ginger or Mary Ann?
Whichever style suits your fancy, here are our reco’s for buying and wearing a romper:
1) Take an at home measure of the inseam length of your favorite shorts, and take a look at where your favorite short skirt hits your leg. Less than a 2″ inseam is a bathing suit in disguise. Which may be ok if you have a rockin’ bod or are entering the pageant circuit. Anything less than a 3″ inseam should stay in the party mode. Honestly, you will need to try them on to see where each leg hits on your body, as these one pieces are often very loose fitting and lanky.
2) Watch your shoe. Flats are fine if you have long legs. If you want or need the endless leg look these can give you, heels will do it. We prefer a wedge or platform wedge as the safer choices, as their heavier look counters the expanse of skin. The wrong pump with the wrong romper and you will move quickly from girlish to Showgirls. A very sexy shoe with a very revealing romper? Then you are just looking to get busy.
3) Remember your waist. If it isn’t cinched, belt it.
4) A simple but substantial necklace, a stack of bangles and a sleek bag. It just seems to work better with these.
