The Demure Bride: Celebrity Trend-Setters

by Anna P. Kelly, scoopWEDDINGS

It’s no secret that we, the little people, have been taking fashion cues from celebrities for time immemorial. When it comes to bridal style, I think we’re seeing a definite trend: the Demure Bride. Even as silhouettes seem to have been slimmed and sexy-fied in the past few years, many gals are at the same time choosing to be a bit more covered than in the past.

I’m of the opinion that Jenna Bush (daughter of George W) really started the trend back in 2008 when she married Henry Hager at her father’s Texas ranch.

Jenna wore a stunning gown designed by the always amazing Oscar de la Renta. The lacy v-neck with straps (and her simple, flower-adorned hairstyle, sans veil) set a trend in motion of which we’re still seeing the aftereffects.

On to celebrity trend-setter number two – Jenna’s cousin, Lauren Bush. Incidentally, Lauren married David Lauren, son of designer Ralph Lauren. Her legal name is now Lauren Bush Lauren, which I find delightfully amusing. David and Lauren’s September 2011 wedding took place at the Lauren family’s ranch in Colorado and had a vintage western theme. The photo below looks as if it could have been taken a century ago!

Lauren’s long-sleeved wedding dress, designed by Ralph Lauren, was made of tulle, lace and crystals. The gown reportedly took 3,000 hours to make, with 100 craftspeople hand-embroidering pearls, small flower motifs, and scroll designs in ivory silk thread.

Trend-setter #3 is the lovely Ivanka Trump. Despite her uber-famous dad’s notorious over-the-top-ness, this girl inherited a great sense of style. For her October 2009 nuptials to Jared Kushner, she donned a gorgeous Vera Wang gown.

Bucking the popularity of slimmer trumpet or mermaid shaped gowns, Ivanka opted for a full ball skirt. The entire gown was overlain with a delicate chantilly lace that formed a bateau neckline and elegant elbow-length sleeves.

On to our next trend-setter, Amy Smart. Amy and her beau Carter Oosterhouse were married on a popular date this past year, 9/10/11. Easy to remember, and Amy’s lovely Carolina Herrera dress is also hard to forget.

Layers of ruffles were contained to a slimmer silhouette, keeping petite Amy from being overwhelmed by fabric. The graceful v-neck showed off her collarbone and neck beautifully.

Finally, we have the always stunning Molly Sims. Her alluring gown was designed by the incomparable Marchesa, one of my personal favorites. Molly married Scott Stuber this past September.

I am simply wowed by Molly’s beautiful, delicate gown. The lace overlay and flutter sleeves are demure and dainty, while the shape-hugging silhouette allowed her to show of those rockin’ model-body curves. And listen up, ladies – this is not to say that you must have a model-body yourself to wow in a silhouette like this! Many brides are surprised to find that they love more fitted gowns, even if they never thought they would.

Are you loving the covered look, or is strapless still going to rule the roost for a while? Let us know what you think!
