It might be a bit of a tired saying, but breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. And yet, even in less hectic seasons, it’s still so easy to skip this meal, or grab something unhealthy on the run. This time of year, it can take a real commitment to health to keep yourself and your family starting off the day the right way. Just remember:
1. Skipping breakfast may make you hungrier and more likely to eat larger meals later in the day. This can lead to a spike in blood sugar and may eventually result in diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
2. Making breakfast your largest meal of the day can lead to weight loss because you’ll have all day long to burn off those calories. Plus, eating breakfast wakes up the metabolism and gets it revved up for the day.
3. Breakfast provides energy for our daily activities, helps us concentrate better in the workplace or at school, and combats that mid-morning slump.
4. When we eat breakfast, we provide our bodies with a more nutritionally balanced diet that is higher in nutrients and essential vitamins and minerals.
The most common excuse of breakfast skippers is that they simply don’t the have time in the morning.
You can always prepare breakfast the night before, wake up ten minutes earlier, or keep your home or office stocked with convenient on-the-go options. Some great on-the-go breakfasts include granola bars, nutrition bars, fruit, smoothies, plain instant oatmeal, and Greek yogurt. Be sure to read the labels for sugar content though.
I also love making breakfast burritos. They are a great source of fiber, protein, and healthy fats and can be easily wrapped up and carried to school, work, or wherever you’re headed off to in the morning.
Quick & Healthy Breakfast Burrito
Ingredients:
2 egg whites
1 small whole wheat tortilla
1/4 cup black beans (rinsed)
1/4 avocado (sliced)
2 tablespoons salsa
Directions: Coat a frying pan with cooking spray. Scramble the egg whites in the pan until done. Place the eggs over the tortilla. Add the black beans, avocado, and salsa. Roll the tortilla into a wrap.
So, make eating breakfast every morning a priority.  Just be sure to keep it healthy- the free pastries and doughnuts in the break room don’t count!
