What to Wear in a Polar Vortex.

First, kudos to the genius who coined this weather term.  As Stephen Colbert says, Polar Vortex sounds so terrifying AND all science-y at the same time.  To stay warm, take your cues from the slopes and get your base layers right.  Then, layer and layer with some cuteness on top, and you will be toasty and tasteful for the frigid weather.  By the time you read this, we hope the temps are consistently above 20 degrees overnight and all we have to worry about is a PartlyCloudPocalypse with a chance of RainAGeddon. Our tips for staying warm in a polar freeze are:

1) Wear non-cotton socks.  There is a reason people love smartwool so much, and that ski stores sell special socks.  No need to have cold sweat soaking in your cotton socks, that’s counter-productive.

2) Make sure your torso is warm, and your extremities will stay warmer.  If your hands & feet are always cold, try adding a layer to your torso. A long underwear top over a tank top and under your shirt/sweater/jacket.  Likewise, wear a vest, preferably over your sweaters and under your jacket.

3) Your mother was right.  Wear a hat or wrap your head in a scarf if you want to channel Tipi Hedren and Grace Kelly.  Or both if warmth matters more than looks.  Or if you just can’t live with hat head, get some cute earmuffs pronto, and a coat with a hood.

4) Cover your face with your scarf, particularly your nose & mouth.  This actually warms your breath, which in turn helps keep your body warmer.  Plus, windburn and chapped skin = not pretty.   And don’t forget the aquaphor!

5) If you don’t have a good pair of long underwear (I swear by Polar Max) you can wear stockings or tights.  Layer up Ladies.
