Our Q&A about Varicose Veins with Dr. Eric Wang of The Vein & Vascular Center

Vien & Vascular Center LogoNewSo many of us have them, and just deal, thinking there’s nothing to be done about them that doesn’t involve something major.  Varicose Veins are a progressive problem affecting nearly 80 million Americans. Varicose veins are unsightly…yes, but for some, there is also constant pain and burning sensations.

To get the scoop on treatment for Varicose Veins, we met with Dr. Eric Wang, who is an Interventional Radiologist at The Vein & Vascular Center at Charlotte Radiology.

First off, what even is an Interventional Radiologist?

Dr Wang and his colleagues at the Vein & Vascular Center are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive procedures used to treat varicose veins, uterine fibriods, deep vein thrombosis, certain types of cancer, and the list goes on. We focused on Varicose Veins, but for detailed info on other procedures visit their comprehensive website.

What are the minimally invasive procedures available to treat varicose veins?

There are actually three procedures; Radiofrequency Ablation(RFA), Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), and Sclerotherapy.

RFA and EVLT treat the problem at the source. A tiny incision is made (after numbing the skin) and a thin laser fiber is used to seal the vein. It takes about 45 minutes. A compression stocking is worn for two weeks following the procedure. With the exception of rigorous exercise, you may resume normal activities and will most likely experience immediate relief from the symptoms of painful, burning legs.

Sclerotherapy can be done in conjunction with EVLT/RFA or alone. Sclerotherapy treats the vein at the surface by using a tiny needle to deliver a liquid agent into the veins, causing them to shrink. After treatment patients will walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes and wear a compression stocking for 2 weeks.

Why choose one of these procedures at the VVC?

These minimally invasive treatments mean less risk of surgical infection, no hospital stay, and little to no down time.  Plus, the facilities are really nice, comfortable and almost spa like as a setting.  A few photos are below.

Is it covered by insurance?

The procedure is often covered by insurance.  During your initial consultation the physical can discuss the treatment options best suited for you and the staff can help navigate the insurance questions.
