I love my job as a personal trainer, writer, and motivator. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing someone find the gateway to happiness through hard work and dedication. There can be a lot of clutter and confusion when trying to find answers for fat loss. I am here to help you clear that clutter and get to the truth about fitness. I took the 7 most FAQ’s of the past several months and laid them out for you!
Question 1 : “There is so much out there about diet/nutrition that it can be overwhelming. What would you recommend as the first step in the beginning to change my daily diet/nutrition?”
My Answer:
The first step in changing your nutrition is changing your mindset. You have to be mentally ready for a change. Proper eating in the modern world is challenging and so people who achieve that have an especially strong mindset. Most of all…you have to WANT to change and have a “why ” backing you up. When you can distinguish what the difference between dedication to your goals and interest in your goals, you then will be ready to eat clean and train mean! The days of dieting are dead. More and more fitness professionals are realizing that whole food nutrition has to be the foundation of a plan for success. We aren’t going to put you on a diet people! This question can be summed up in one phrase…if it doesn’t come from the directly from the earth, stay away!
Question: “I can feel the difference in my clothes, but why have no pounds come off?”
My Answer:
When you begin a new exercise program, specifically a vigorous one, your body will experience trauma to the extent of micro muscle tears. This will confuse your body because it is not adapted to the experience. Your body’s response mechanism is much like swelling that occurs when you accidentally bump your forehead, the water comes to the rescue. This sudden emergence of water is then absorbed by sponge-like glycogen molecule, otherwise known as water retention. This water retention may cause a 2-4 lbs of weight gain over the first 4-6 weeks of an intense program. Don’t freak out! It is only temporary and you will start seeing the scale move. Body fat loss is MUCH more important and body fat starts to diminish immediately with clean eating habits.
Question: “You always talk about bursting training. What exactly is “burst trainingâ€?
My Answer:
Burst training is the single most effective way to burn body fat. Burst training or “bursting” as I normally refer to it, has been scientifically proven to burn fat up to 9x more effectively than traditional cardio and in half the time. Bursting consists of 20 seconds of exercise immediately followed by 20 seconds of rest. A typical burst training session will last 15 minutes and consist of 4 exercises and 5 rounds of each. Click here to watch/follow a MamaBurstâ„¢ training video where I take you through an entire burst session!
Question: “Have you had any experience with women who have had multiple c-sections & losing belly fat/strengthening lower abdominal muscles? I am curious because I just feel as if my stomach, especially my lower abdominal area, is very flabby. When I try to concentrate on contracting my muscles it is very difficult. Any suggestions?”
My Answer:
Keep contracting your stomach and keep focus on driving your belly button to your spine in all core movements. You cannot spot train specific areas so you will not be able to JUST take body fat off of your stomach, it has to come off of your body globally. Some of us hold more body fat in certain areas based on genetics. The great thing is that our body is regenerating itself every single day and with good nutrition you are able to build health from the inside out. Add that to training the efficiently, and that unwanted skin or body fat around your stomach area will regenerate faster. Keep focusing on on diet and training and it will come…it just takes time when you have had any type of delivery. The best way to prevent any of lasting “defects” is to do it right during pregnancy.
Question: “What are the basic, nutritious, go-to foods that I should always keep on hand?”
My Answer:
The top 10 that I always carry with me are: 1. Unsalted mixed nuts, 2. Bananas/apples with almond butter, 3. Carrots, snap peas, hummus, 4. Shaklee 180 Smoothies, 5. Hard Boiled Eggs, 6. Banana Chips, 7. Kale Chips, 8. Ezekiel Bread, 9. Clean and lean lunch meats (Applegate Farms is a good one), 10. Shaklee 180 Meal Bars. Some of this stuff may require a cooler. Pack a cooler the night before and throw it in your car on the way out of the house! While you are making your kids’ lunch, make your own as well!
Question: “What are your thoughts on Supplements?”
Let’s get something clear about my approach to nutrition. When it comes to real whole foods there is no substitute. No supplement can do what a well balanced whole food menu can do for your body. But I am a realist and understand that we are in a grab and go society. There is always time to prepare whole foods, but it is much easier to grab a pre-made all natural supplement. Supplements are NOT whole foods, not a single one of them.
With that being said, I use two supplements daily, Shaklee Vitalizer (all-in-one vitamin strip) and Shaklee 180 Smoothies. I am not going to say anything negative about other companies. But I will say that Shaklee is the only thing I trust to put in my body based on my extensive research. So if you are looking for things to stay away from, check your supplements and stay away from the following artificial ingredients: sucrolose, aspartame, acefultame K, acefultame potassium, neotame, yellow, green, blue, BHT.
