Nesting is the most powerful instinct. In the past year since my baby was born, I have frequently wished I could have bottled that stuff up so I could take a hit now, like, once a week.
There is so much to do to feel like you are ready for this little person to show up at your home, soooo I guess its only fair that nesting is only for new mamas.
Speaking of… WHERE DO YOU EVEN START?!
Many interior decorators suggest starting with a mood board. Or a Pinterest board, for the graphic-design challenged (raises hand). Christine Dovey, blogger and interior decorator at Bijou and Boheme, has some amazing ones she created for her clients that she shares on the blog, like this one:
A good mood-board obviously includes the basic essential furniture pieces – the crib, the bedding, changing table/dresser, a chair for mama to breastfeed/bottlefeed in, etc. But it also includes attention to the things that make it a lovely space to stay in, not only for baby, but for you… the rug, the curtains, wallpaper/paint colors, accent decor and things to hang on the wall…
When it comes to getting a handle on exactly what you want in this room, Shower Me With Love, the baby one-shop-stop in Morrison, gave us some awesome advice to share with y’all.
1st… baby will grow up faster than you have time to redecorate. For the investment pieces, you want to pick styles, colors and designs that will work through the toddler years, preschool, and right up to middle school – which is probably when they will be all “This room is not ME. I need blacklights and chalk walls and alltheJayZ!” Just kidding. JayZ will be downright grandma by then.
You want to pick something durable for a rug, for example; something that will last from a style perspective as they age. Be wary of going too juvenile here. We picked Shower Me With Love to for our scoop find here because they offer such great options for this:
^…oooo that brown zebra one really caught my eye!
2nd. Shower Me With Love provides a fantastic array of options to easily coordinate the entire room in one swoop.
The fabric swatches are brilliant for upholstering chairs, hanging drapes, and picking out bedding.
3rd. A chair that is comfortable (and durable) enough to hold lots of nursing, bottle-feeding, rocking at night, and reading, is a very important investment, as any seasoned mama will tell you.
Here are our fave chairs right now:
*Keep in mind that a chair capable of performing all of the necessary nursery functions, would be a good purchase to make at a place like Shower Me With Love. As curators and baby-experts, they are going to be naturally more mindful of its comfort and practicality for tending to a baby, as opposed to just its style factor. Your lower back will thank you for this foresight.*
4th. When it comes to the changing table/dresser, keep in mind you don’t have to go old-fashioned changing table here, unless you are having more than one baby, and/or you would prefer a table with a rail around the top.
You can easily find dressers wide enough to accommodate a cushion for babe and the wipes/butt paste/diapers you need for the changing station.
Check out this one in the far corner:
I personally wish I had thought to get a more hybrid changing table than I did! Ours is awkward and dust-collecting after the first year or so (cuz by that point, you are just pinning them down on the rug for a quick and dirty change. hashtag keepinitreal).
5th. When it comes to the crib, the world is yo oyster. Some people end up loving the hybrid crib – the one that pulls down to a toddler bed and a double bed headboard and a trampoline did I already say toddler bed? 😉 Some just love the crib that is only a crib – like a wedding dress; something you pour your heart into and then store away sentimentally for future nostalgia.
You can find the latest in safe, beautiful, modern styles at Shower Me With Love.
Finally, 5th. You can have the most fun with wall decor! GO CRAZY. This is where you can mix in some cheap and cheerful stuff for each stage of baby’s growth.
We found some awesome inspo pages at Houzz here and here.
And we love these finds at Shower Me With Love:
I really like the idea of pairing these vibrant pops of color with neutral walls.
Finally, here’s a very thorough list for all the boring yet necessary baby care stuff you’ll need to cram into this room.
Happy nesting!
