Last Minute Halloween Ideas to Celebrate in Spooky Style

When it comes to holidays that inspire elaborate decor – Halloween has left Easter in the dust and is closing in on Christmas. From giant inflatables to downright scary scenes – Charlotteans seem to step it up a little more each year in their artful arrangements of pumpkins, skeletons, cats, witches and more.

There’s still time to get in the spooky spirit even if you’re searching for Halloween candy in the midst of Christmas lights and candy canes (remember when Christmas retail started AFTER Thanksgiving?). Whether you’ll be hosting a gathering, tricking or treating with the kids or hitting the hottest Halloween parties in town – check out some easy ideas to celebrate in scary style.

Decor

You’ll surely draw attention by staging a scene on your porch/lawn with skeletons (it’s both scary and funny at the same time!)

Fill your glass jars and hurricanes with whatever Halloween items are on sale at the stores (i.e. pumpkins, eyeballs) and display on the mantel or in your entertaining space.

Melt red candles over white ones for a ghoulish effect.

Make your own spider webs out of trash bags.

Sips

For a Halloween party: Use the bottom half of a carved pumpkin as a festive drink holder

Mix up a haunting cocktail (for your guests or to sip while passing out candy) like a Vampire’s Kiss

Mix up Black Light Lemonade for your Halloween party – the tonic water makes it glow under black light.

Style

Whether you harbor a preschooler’s love of Disney princesses or would rather kick butt a la Wonder Woman, we’re never too old to dress up on Halloween. Get creative with a DIY costume or make it quick and easy with a rental – here are a few ideas for inspiration:

Madonna (The Material Girl is always a hit – choose your favorite Madonna (i.e. Like A Virgin Madonna, Like A Prayer Madonna) and browse the thrift stores to create your ensemble:

As if! You can transform into 90’s It Girl Cher from Clueless with just a few items (i.e. white knee socks, blazer, patterned skirt and luxury shopping bags)

Get struck by lightening for a couples costume

And for all of us binge watchers – hit the uniform store to dress up as Piper or Alex from Orange is the New Black.
