Arranged on a mantel, hung on the wall, or displayed on a console, collections can bring a room to life by expressing personality. The collection communicates individual passions and pursuits and takes a room from bland to a distinctive. Every collection tells a story and every story needs an organized presentation.
There is a razor thin line between collecting and hoarding. In the world of interior design the difference between the two rests in the DISPLAY. Let’s face it, the displaying of a collection is where you either look fashionably put together or demented. Here are a few tips:
1.Gathering– bring your collection together in one spot. Fill an etagere with antique decanters instead of scattering them all over the house. Pulled together they make a dramatic impact.
2. Balance– think odd numbers (1,3,5,7 etc). This is the way items balance in nature. You don’t see a 2 pronged leaf for instance. The eye likes a stand alone object or a gathering in odd numbers.
3. Contrast– tall/small, dark/light, round/square. When placing items together on a mantel or console place contrasting objects next to one another. It helps each singular piece stand out among the collection.
Taking these guidelines into consideration when displaying (or hanging) your collection will bring harmony among the chaos and make you an aesthete instead of a hoarder.
