What To Do & Where To Go Around the Lake (June 11, 2015 Edition)

If you’re looking for live music and with a lovely Lake breeze, be sure to check out Queens Landing Thursday, June 11 in The Melanie Williams Amphitheater from 5-9 p.m. It’s one of the largest outdoor venues on the Lake. The amphitheater has a great stage, plenty of seating, and a huge grass field. Bring the kids or your best gals. Both will make for a great night!

Get ready to purrr your cheers for an all local cast performing in the musical CATS at the Community School of Davidson ArtSpace June 9-14, 2015. The performance is based on the poems of T.S. Elliot. CATS is a musical that is entirely sung and danced. The production will be staged in the round offering a very unique perspective on the cats’ lives in an old junkyard.  Advance ticketing is $9 per seat and available online at www.CSDspartans.org. It’s a lip sync battle waiting to happen at the Kilted Buffalo in Birkdale Friday, June 12. It’s free to enter and there is cash and gift card prizes for first and second place. Contestants get to pick their own song and come prepared. You can go solo or as a group. Costumes and routines are welcome but not required. We will register from 9:30-10:30 p.m. with the contest starting around 10:45 pm. DJ Scott will be spinning tunes from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Lucky Dog Bark & Brew invite you to a Bulldog Luau with Bullies 2 Rescue Saturday, June 13 from 7-10 p.m. Bullies 2 Rescue will be hosting a Luau and swimsuit contest to benefit their rescue efforts. They will have goodies for sale, and there will be tons of wiggly love. Beyond Walls is the town’s first public art exhibition, which will take place at Robbins Park from June 13-November 17, 2015. This exhibit features public artworks from nine regional artists. The Public Art Committee (PAC) orchestrated an open call for submissions and a selection panel voted to select the nine works included in the exhibition. The artists selected for the show are Paris Alexander, Bob Doster, Jim Gallucci, Aisling Millar McDonald, Harry McDaniel, Rich Nossel, Virginia Scotchie, Adam Walls and Jim Weitzel. Saturday, June 13 there will be a celebration of the opening from 3-6 p.m. at Robbins Park that’s free and open to the public. Enjoy food vendors, a wine reception, kids’ crafts, and live music. The artists will talk about their work starting at 3:30 p.m.

The seventh-annual Big Day at the Lake Cruise will be held June 14 aboard the charter boat Yachta Yachta Yachta, which will sail out of the Peninsula Yacht Club for a three-hour dinner and dance party beginning 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person for the cruise, which will feature food provided by five Lake Norman-area restaurants, an open bar and music. Proceeds will go toward Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte, which currently serves nearly 250 children in the northern Mecklenburg County area. Just an FYI: The annual Big Day at the Lake – which will be held for the 11th straight year on July 18 – has brought hundreds of the children and volunteers served by Big Brothers and Big Sisters to Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake for a day of boating, swimming and tubing, followed by a picnic dinner and games at Duke Energy’s Energy Explorium in Huntersville. For details or to reserve tickets for the Big Day at the Lake Cruise, call 704-232-5536 or visit www.bigdayatthelake.com.
