Shopping for college can be a pain, especially for freshman moving into dorms for the first time. It’s difficult to determine exactly what you’re going to need for your first (second, third or fourth) year away from home. Luckily we have a UNC-Chapel Hill blogger writing this post, and she’s done the research first-hand to help you pack the “small stuff” to make her dorm or apartment feel like home. Whether you are college bound yourself, or are a mom, grandmother, godmother or friend, these are the things you want to get.
1. Command Hooks! —- These bad boys are a life saver for dorms where hammers and nails are a ‘no no.’ Hang up artwork, towels, necklaces or just about anything. Check out this list for more ideas.
2. Mattress Pad!—- Another absolute must for stiff dorm beds. Whether you go with a memory foam topper, a quilted down pad or a hypo-allergenic version, pick Twin Extra Long. Pair with soft sheets, a cute duvet and fluffy pillows.
3. Lighting! —- Dorm room lights can be a bit dull. Grab a small lamp to put by your bed for lighting when your roommate is trying to sleep. This table lamp from Ikea is only $12.99. Like a little light when you’re sleeping? Night lights are great too. Like it pitch black dark? Bring an eye mask. This one by Bucky is a good choice.
4. Plates/Bowels/Drinkware/Utensils —- Find cute and affordable kitchen goods at Target – their Mudhut melamine plates are adorable. Eating in the cafeteria for every meal gets old quickly. Two of each is all you need. Stick to cute disposable items if washing dishes in a bathroom sink isn’t your thing.
5. Water Pitcher —- For cold, clean water that tastes much better than straight from your bathroom sink. Brita filtered pitchers work great. Just make sure it fits in your mini-fridge!
6. Decorating Accessories —- Fill your dorm room with art and pictures that remind you of home. The Charlotte boutiques have the perfect accessories to spruce up your little room.
