If you’ve been wondering what all the barre fuss is about, but have not yet tried a class at FLYBARRE, well, now’s your moment my friends.

In partnership with the folks at Flywheel Sports Charlotte, scoopcharlotte brings you an exclusive Intro to FlyBarre Series with three chances for you to try the burn at the barre.

All those new-to-FlyBarre are welcome. Pick your free class from the options below:

  • 11/8 at 1:15PM w/ Brie
  • 11/15 at 1:15PM SPORT w/ Carrie
  • 11/22 at 1:15PM w/ Sarah

These free classes are only available to NEW to FlyBarre customers, and you can only be “new” once.  (Yes, sadly, there are no born-again virgins.)  Each newbie will receive a special follow-up offer for future FlyBarre classes, so you’ll be motivated to try several more classes.

At FlyBarre, most clients need at least 3 classes to get the moves and sequencing down so that they can get into really effectively working their muscles. Ideally, to see changes in your form, you want to take 3 or more classes a week for at least 4 weeks.

What to Know about FlyBarre Before You Go

FlyBarre and other barre methods use a combination of moves inspired by ballet, Pilates and yoga. It is all weight-bearing work, and you will use your own body to work in small and isometric movements that directly target and tone your muscles.  The barre is used for balance while you do isometric strength training (holding your body still while you contract a specific set of muscles) combined with high reps of small movements. You may also use 2-3 lb. hand weights, a ball and/or a band in some sequences, to add to the muscle focus.

You’ll warm up, you’ll do a sequence of upper-body exercises, which include free weights, push-ups, planks and other moves to target the biceps, triceps, chest, and back muscles. You’ll use the ballet barre and your own body weight for resistance to focus on the thigh and seat muscles through pulsing moves. Your core will be engaged for the entire class and then will be specifically targeted at the end of class. And you’ll go through a series of stretches to increase flexibility and allow your muscles to recover.

Tips for the FlyBarre Newbie

Come early so you can check in at the front desk, get your locker, introduce yourself to the instructor, get set up in your spot.

Wear fitted, body conscious clothing.   You want the teacher to be able to see your form, and your barre mates don’t want to see any more of you than absolutely necessary. Unless you want your lovely belly exposed, a tight top works best; running and loose shorts almost never work best.

No shoes, no socks.  You won’t need special socks unless you want them. FlyBarre is done on hardwood in bare feet, and on mats provided by the studio.

Fuel yourself properly for a class. Bring Water. It’s more exhausting than it looks.

Don’t be intimidated by the exercises. Think quality over quantity. It’s not about how many pounds you can lift. Barre classes are all about precision and proper form; you’ll do smaller, slower movements, but you’ll definitely feel them.

Don’t expect to look like a graceful ballerina. Unless you already are a graceful ballerina. Use the mirror to check your own form, again, it’s all in the proper positioning.  FlyBarre develops strength, balance and flexibility. If you’re weak in any of those areas, it can be a challenge.

You will shake, rattle and roll. No seriously, if you do the moves correctly, small and isolated as they are, you can shake like a leaf during leg work.  And you will feel the burn, even if you are a marathon runner, power-up behemoth, torq-board monster. Which is the whole point. The shake is a sign that you have correctly targeted and fatigued your quads or other large muscles to the point that they shake.  The burn, well, you know the burn means it’s good work.
