We all have that friend that always seems to find the best deals and loves to let us know about it. “Oh, this dress? Found it on the clearance rack for $20, marked down 80% plus I had a coupon” Most of us don’t have the time and energy to scour the stores looking for these kinds of deals. That is why you need to get to know Charlotte’s consignment stores.
Charlotte is home to a number of well established upscale consignment shops, and we’ve gathered tips from the owners of J.T. Posh, Nouveaux Couture Consignment and Classic Attic to guide you through successful consignment shopping.
Carly Edmiston, owner of Nouveaux in Ballantyne Village, says “Don’t be surprised to find items that are still new with tags …this gives you a good idea of what you would have paid in a retail store.” Consignment stores have sales too, “most stores mark down items after 30 or 60 days, look for the last chance clearance section” says Edmiston. In the age of selfies, shopping consignment gives you the chance to wear a dress once or twice and trade it in for something new for the next night out.
J.T. Posh owner Jen Popieniek encourages customers to follow the store’s  Instagram feed, “We post popular brands and high end items on Instagram and give customers the ability to purchase over the phone and have it shipped right to them” This is a great way to grab a Kate Spade bag or Chanel sunglasses while saving time and money. J.T. Posh also offers special sale days through out the year that give customers additional savings when they bring in their pink bags.
Shopping consignment isn’t just about clothing and accessories, consider refreshing your home or filling your new apartment with furniture from Classic Attic. Owner Ede Graves says “Most pieces at Classic Attic are reused exactly as they are, no DIY necessary, but if you have a specific look you’re going for, open your eyes to color, hardware, legs, fabric . . . they can ALL be changed.” Just like the clothing consignment boutiques, “we often have new items that just didn’t work for the buyer. Sometimes, the draperies are from a model home, the furniture is from a designer shop”
Just like full price boutiques and furniture stores, get to know the staff. They can explain how the store is laid out according to brands, sizes and style and most stores have a wish list and will contact you when the item you are on the hunt for comes in.
