Have you seen these tiny houses popping up around town? They may look like birdhouses, but instead of eggs, they’re full of books. They’re called Little Free Libraries and they’re the latest way The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation Friends Council and Neighborhood Matching Grants are working to promote literacy, recycling and a general love of reading.
How does it work?
Find a Little Free Library in your neighborhood, near your office or along your running route. When you walk by, feel free to grab a book. No money or library card necessary. Got some extra books at home that you’re done reading? Drop them off so others can enjoy them (it’s a great way to get rid of those old titles from your book club).
Where can I find a Little Free Library?
There are dozens all over Charlotte and Lake Norman, and in neighborhoods across the state and country. Use this map to find one near you.
What kinds of books can I get (or leave)?
All kinds! Children’s books, adult nonfiction — anything you can think of.
How can I get a Little Free Library in my neighborhood?
First, identify a location that’s safe, inviting and has a lot of foot traffic. You’ll also need to find a “steward” who will keep the library safe, clean and inviting.
Once you’ve identified a location (and gotten all the legal permissions), you’ll need to determine how to build the library. You can build it yourself or purchase through the online catalog (prices start at $225). This cedar roof basic model is $300, and is ready to be painted, stained, mosaic-ed … however you want to express yourself.
After you install your library, you’ll need to promote it by telling neighbors, contacting local media outlets and using social media. You’ll also need to add it to Little Free Libraries’ world map we linked above.
