Don’t wait for picked-over shelves and low stocks to force you into a costume you’re not excited about- plan ahead with our picks for the best Halloween costume ideas for 2016.
This year’s National Retail Federation (NRF)’s consumer survey promises plenty of crime fighting superheroes ~action/superheroes topped the list of most popular children’s costume choices with princesses and animals coming in close behind. For adults, there is one super obvious winner in this crazy election year, as Trumps/Clintons will be everywhere you look.
If you have the time and creative talent to pull off something homemade, you’ll not only have pride in your project (and get to brag a little about your skills), but you will most likely save a little money too. Some easy DIY-ers to try this year are:
Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky:
Throw on some star-spangled spandex, swimming goggles, and dig up that old participation medal from your kickball league and you’re good to go for the gold! If you have a group, the “Final Five” would be a great spin on an Olympic costume- just sub the goggles for big hairbows and lots of glitter.
Audrey Hepburn:
Such a classic and so easy. Just layer on the pearls, throw on your favorite LBD, and ooze sophistication as the original “It Girl.” A sleek bun will do wonders for pulling this one off.
Animals:
For some reason at 28 years old, I have a somewhat large supply of headbands with ears on them. If you’ve accumulated a similar collection from past costumes, sporting event swag, and the like, put those puppies to good use as a dog, cat, bunny, deer… you name it! The nice thing about this kind of costume is that the ears and fun makeup do most of the work for you while you get to choose whatever you feel most fabulous in for your clothes- be it jeans and a t-shirt or a fancy dress. This is a great option for a Halloween-resistant guy too- ear, jeans, done!
Political:
In an election year, political Halloween costumes are everywhere. Get in on the fun with your best Trump or Hillary. For The Donald, suit, tie, “VOTE” button, and maybe a “Make America Great Again Cap” are all you’ll need. Hilz on the other hand just needs a pantsuit and you’re good to go!
Khalessi:
Any GoT fan will swear by the Old Gods and the New that they’ve spotted the Mother of Dragons if you follow this formula for a simple but stunning Khalessi costume: long waves and braids (wig may be required), maxi dress, interesting jewelry, and a stuffed dragon as a bonus! Be sure to pack your best posture and queen-like tendencies whether you’re hitting the town, a house party, or your neighborhood streets.
