One of our favorite spring garden parties in Charlotte is the Turquoise Tasting, a cocktail party in the garden at The Duke Mansion benefiting American Lung Association’s lung cancer initiative. This year, the Turquoise Tasting will be Thursday, May 18 from 7-10 pm.
The evening includes an assortment of seasonal tastings paired with wine or beer, music, raffle baskets plus everyone’s favorite, the wine pull….where you make a small donation to pick an unknown bottle of wine ~ which could be valued anywhere from $20 to $200.
With presenting sponsor CHARLOTTE RADIOLOGY, the event is designed to raise awareness to the devastating impact of lung cancer on women:
- Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women.
- It’s estimated that lung cancer will represent more than 1 in 4 female cancer deaths.
- On average, less than half of all women diagnosed with lung cancer will be alive one year after diagnosis.
You can see more photos from last year’s inaugural event by the talented Erica Mark on the Turquoise Tasting website here. Don’t miss this chance to do good and enjoy the gorgeous gardens at The Duke Mansion.

A Charlotte Knights game basket is compliments of BB&T and the Knights. The event also features a “wine pull.” When guests make a $25 donation, they get to choose a mystery bottle of wine that could be valued anywhere from $20 to $200.
Last year’s inaugural event raised nearly $35,000. LUNG FORCE board chair McCay Manwaring, who lost her mother to lung cancer last year, hopes to raise even more this year. “More must be done to raise awareness and research funding to defeat lung cancer once and for all,” Manwaring said. “That’s why we launched the first-ever Turquoise Tasting last year. Turquoise is the official color of women’s lung health, and through American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE, we unite to educate our local communities about the importance of fighting this devastating disease.”
Dr. Michael Kelley of Charlotte Radiology said, “Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of men and women in the United States. This is why Charlotte Radiology is proud to once again sponsor this event and advocate for early detection of this dreaded disease. As radiologists, we know that low dose CT lung cancer screening is the most accurate tool for detecting this disease at an earlier stage.”
American Lung Association LUNG FORCE is leading this fight with a plan to invest $10 million in lung cancer research and $5 million in increasing public health promotion. This includes awareness of early detection tools, such as CT screening; providing patients with information about clinical trials, biomarker testing and support from the first day of diagnosis; and advocating for increasing federal funding for lung cancer research from $362 million today to $450 million by 2020.
