In 2009, a blood clot resulted in the amputation of my left leg above the knee.
Prior to my amputation, I lived a very active and athletic lifestyle. I felt lost after my amputation. I thrived when I was active and didn’t know what my “new” life would be like. I vowed to do whatever it took to regain the confidence sports gave me.
Seven months after receiving my prosthetic leg, I completed my first-ever triathlon. My athletic pursuits and challenges have only increased since my amputation. Not only do I strive to be active and challenge myself, I make it a point to mentor, coach, and inspire others to do the same. In fact, I find my greatest joy in seeing someone achieve something they never thought possible.
This inspired me to create The Rookie Run ‘N’ Walk, a 5k for the true beginner. Many people have shared they were embarrassed to participate in a “normal” 5k. They feared they would be the only one walking or would come in last place. The Rookie Run ‘N’ Walk is for people of all sizes, shapes, ages and abilities. We try to take the fear and anxiety out of a typical 5k by offering an untimed event, free 10 week in-person training program to help you get started, and buddies to help encourage the rookies to the finish line. We celebrate the final finisher more than the first.
Even though I had completed half-marathons prior to my amputation, running was a mental struggle for me. Despite the many miles I have run in my life, I have only experienced two “runners’ highs”. I understand the mental barriers someone has to overcome and believe we provide the atmosphere to help those who struggle accomplish their goal of completing a 5k.
We offer 3 training program levels (intermediate, beginner and walk only) so anyone can participate. Each week at our in person training, I share an intention to help encourage positive thoughts for that training session and for the upcoming week. I leave each week inspired. To see the looks of accomplishment on the rookie’s faces and knowing I helped in some small way is more rewarding than I could have imagined.
Buddies, however, are the game changer. At our weekly trainings and on the event day, we pair up buddies with rookies to help encourage them. I have heard from rookies that they couldn’t have done it without the buddies and have heard from buddies that they have never been more inspired and proud.
This is our 3rd year, and second year partnering with OrthoCarolina. We believe it will be the best event to date. It is not too late to sign up as a rookie or buddy.
