Opera Carolina’s Carmen Brings Spice and Seduction to their She Series Season
“Well behaved women rarely make history” – Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Carmen is certainly one of the unforgettable bad girls who made their mark on history. The scandalously sexy heroine who rocked audiences when she first hit the stage with her smoking, drinking and full time employment continues to transcend the opera world. She has seeped into pop culture time and time again, think Glenn Close’s role in Fatal Attraction. Georges Bizet’s femme fatale leading lady also obsesses over the one man she can’t have, taking it all the way to her death.
Even Queen Bey was drawn to play the sultry gypsy in MTV’s Carmen: A Hip Hopera.
“What’s interesting about Carmen,” says Alyson Cambridge, lead actress in Opera Carolina’s Carmen, “is she both takes advantage of, and is a victim of, of her strengths and vulnerabilities. She succumbs to her own passions which becomes her undoing. She’s a very complex character – she’s not just a sexy femme fatale, there’s a lot more to her.”
Not only has the heroine endured, the music of Carmen is one of the most recognizable opera scores too. From The Muppets and Disney movies to countless commercials, you are sure to have heard the notes a time or two.
If the story line of Carmen is not spicy enough for you, skip the white wine at the concession booth and try the limited edition craft beer from Bold Missy Brewery. Carmen Get It! Spicy Cinnamon Brown Ale will be on tap for all of Carmen’s performances.
