The advice that you should periodically spend the night in your own guest bedroom is solid ~ is it comfortable? too hot? too cold? noisy? dark enough? does it actually accommodate a guest’s needs? You’ll find out all sorts of things if you stay a couple of nights as your own guest.
Here’s a list of items every guest bedroom should ideally have:
Closet space with hangers, luggage rack or bench, drawer space
A comfortable bed, clean sheets, enough blankets and a variety of pillows ~ feathered & non, a few different sizes.
A nice throw or extra blanket in case the couple has different needs for warmth
A bedside table and reading light
Easy to reach outlets with available plugs for phones, etc. Or extension cords to make that happen. Or multi outlet surge protectors.
A wastebasket. In both the bedroom and the bathroom
A full length mirror. This is often forgotten and really nice to have
Wifi Password written out
Water pitcher and glasses or water bottles
Nightlight in the bathroom that can be switched on or off. Flashlight also nice
Curtains or some sort of privacy on all windows. I can’t tell you the guest bathrooms that have windows open view to the back yard. Awkward
Sleep masks especially if your room is not very dark
TV with remote and channel guide / easy use instructions
Clean towels, Extra TP, soap and toiletries in bathroom
Clock with alarm for the old school
Tissues
Magazines and/or books
Candles or room spray. Sometimes unused rooms get stale smelling, this helps
