In June we shared a complete guide to a lesser known small town getaway nestled in the mountains of North Carolina (for that info, click here). Now, it’s time to share one more.
Whether you’re looking for one final trip before the summer ends, are planning a fall leaf peeping trip, or are hoping to enjoy fresh scenery while working remotely, this destination is a perfect spot to consider. Keep reading for the best places to stay and what to do once you’re there.
Washington, Virginia
Quick Info: Known as “the first Washington” of all of the Washingtons in the United States, Washington, Virginia was officially established in 1796. In fact, the town’s five-block by two-block grid was originally laid out by George Washington himself. Because Washington, DC. is less than 70 miles away some refer to this lovely town as “Little Washington.” In terms of drive time from Charlotte, you’re looking at a quick and scenic 5-hours and 30-minutes.
Why you’d visit: If getting cozy in a town that’s also a National Historic Landmark with a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains sounds wonderful, this town is for you! You’ll also love their amenities like access to the Shenandoah National Park, a Five Diamond/Five Star Inn, and one of the South’s top 50 shops (as voted by Southern Living Magazine).
Where to stay: For a place right downtown, we love both The White Moose Inn and The Inn at Little Washington (mentioned above). The Inn at Little Washington really needs no intro – it’s the first and only 3 Star Michelin restaurant in the entire Washington, DC metro area and it has held the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond distinction the longest in the entire world. Wow! If you’re lucky enough to stay there, enjoy!
For something without the price-tag that accompanies that distinction, we love The White Moose Inn. Also downtown, the inn has a lovely fresh, crips decor with splashes of country chic. You’ll also be able to enjoy daily complimentary breakfast by their fireplace or outside on their deck along with an afternoon happy hour feature local wines and spirits.
Finally, if you don’t mind staying outside of the historic downtown then Glen Gordon Manor is another great pick. It’s technically in Huntly, VA (just 13-minutes outside of town) and you’ll love their lavishly appointed suites, complimentary gourmet breakfast, and beautiful mountain views.
What to do: We already mentioned one of the top 50 shops in the South is located here – r.h. ballard shop & gallery. Head there to browse all things home goods and to see why they earned this ranking by Southern Living. One other nearby shop we love is Elizabeth Locke Jewels – you don’t want to miss a chance to see her renowned style in person. While you’re in the area, you’ll also want to soak in the gorgeous views and sip the local wine – below are our top picks in both categories to help you do just that.
Enjoy the Outdoors
Soak in views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park by enjoying Skyline Drive – a 105 mile stretch of road that runs along the mountains’ crest.
Visit Luray Caverns – the largest caverns in the eastern US.
Take a hike! Glen Gordon Manor has some wonderful hiking recommendations for all levels – check out their list here.
Appreciate the Sanctity of the Vine
Head to Wine Loves Chocolate to experience wine paired perfectly with chocolate.
Explore Virginia wine country! Little Washington Winery and Brewery, Gadino Cellars, and Quièvremont Vineyard & Winery are all in Washington. For something very unique and outside of town we love Narmada Winery – the owners are originally from Mumbai and their wines pair incredibly well with traditional Indian food, which they offer on site.
Other small towns we love nearby in Virginia: Lexington, Sperryville, Staunton, and Front Royal.
