Many of us would love to turn back the clock by tightening the skin on our face and neck. But the thought of pain, swelling and post-procedure downtime definitely makes us think twice before seeking treatments or surgery.
Enter Sofwave, a new ultrasound-based device stimulates your body to make new collagen, leading to a “lifting effect” and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, says Charlotte dermatologist Dr. Hayley Leight.
“Sofwave is a fast, minimally painful, safe and effective treatment for mild to moderate skin laxity and aging,” Dr. Leight says. “We were the first practice in the Southeast to have the device, and we have the most experience with it. Sofwave does not replace a surgical facelift, but for the right candidates, it is a game-changer. Minimal discomfort, no downtime — this is rare in cosmetic procedures and we are thrilled to offer this treatment to our patients at Dermatology, Laser & Vein Specialists of the Carolinas.”
How it works
Sofwave is typically used to lift and tighten the brow and submental (under the chin) area as well as the face and neck.
After patients go in for their consultation and decide Sofwave is the right treatment for them, a provider will take baseline photos and then apply topical anesthetic before treatment begins.
“There is only mild discomfort during the treatment. Your skin will be numbed with a topical anesthetic and the device itself has a cooling mechanism to offer further comfort,” Dr. Leight says. “After the procedure, the skin may be slightly red, with mild swelling. It is very uncommon to see bruising.”
Typical treatments last about 30 to 45 minutes, and Dr. Leight said she typically recommends either one or two treatments spaced four to eight weeks apart. After that, typically patients should expect to do a maintenance treatment every one to two years.
And what can you expect for downtime after the procedure?
“Sofwave is set apart from other laser and skin tightening treatments on the market because it has virtually no downtime post-procedure,” Dr. Leight says. “That is the magic of Sofwave. You may see mild redness, swelling and a rare risk of bruising. You can go back to your daily activities immediately after your treatment.”
Who should get it
Dr. Leight says Sofwave works best for people with mild to moderate skin laxity and wrinkles, typically starting in their 30s and 40s.
“It’s also great for ‘prejuvenation’ in younger women who want to minimize the aging process and preserve their skin quality,” Dr. Leight
says. “It works very well with other technologies like injectables (dermal fillers) and threadlifts as well as lasers—some of which can be done in the same treatment session as the Sofwave.”
Patients with severe skin laxity may benefit more from a surgical procedure. You can schedule a consultation with DLVSC to find out which treatments would work best for you.
Results are gradual, showing up in the weeks after the procedure and continuing to improve for up to three months.
