Here’s the Scoop on the I Heart Rail Trail Lights Festival in March

The I Heart Rail Trail: Lights 2022 is back this March.

You may remember this from last year, you surely saw it on social media even if you didn’t make it to see in person (sorry about THAT ’cause you def missed out!).

I Heart Rail Trail: Lights returns to South End from March 4th through March 20th.

This year’s Rail Trail exhibit will again celebrate local art and artists with never-before-seen interactive light installations. Five artists from North and South Carolina have been selected to create works that incorporate light into art in some way, and their work will be installed along the Rail Trail during the two+ weeks in March, from 3/4-3/20/22. Click the links below to see their work on their instagrams.

Their works include sculpture, digital projections, wayfinding, and interactive solutions. You can read more about this year’s artists as well as last year’s on the Rail Trail webpage.

I Heart Rail Trail: Lights is part of the I Heart Rail Trail initiative, a partnership between the Charlotte Rail Trail, Charlotte Center City Partners, and U.S. Bank. Learn more about the initiative.

Where to See the 2022 Rail Trail Light Installations

  • 1100 South Plaza | 1100 South Blvd
  • The RailYard Plaza | 1414 S Tryon St.
  • Dilworth Artisan Station Plaza | 118 E Kingston Ave
  • Atherton Mill Plaza & Lawn | 2102 South Blvd

Best Way to Enjoy the I Heart Rail Trail: Lights

Head to South End, where you can start at either 1100 South or at Atherton Mill. Follow the steps below (and do these steps in reverse if you’re starting at Atherton):

  1. Start at the 1100 South installation and walk away from the Uptown skyline until you reach Bland St. Station. Turn right at the Urban Design Center and walk straight until you see the Shops at the Winnifred (look for the yellow awnings). Walk to the front entrance of the building and you will find the second installation.
  2. Make your way back to Bland St. Station, and continue walking away from the skyline on the Rail Trail until you reach the installation at Dilworth Artisan Station.
  3. Continue walking on the Rail Trail until you reach the two installations at Atherton Mill.
