More About Crittenton

Their mission is to promote healing, hope and empowerment by providing comprehensive health, counseling, and education services for single pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents and women, mothers and their babies in the foster care system.

While starting with a focus on helping young women and girls who had become pregnant out of wedlock, Crittenton has evolved significantly through the years to address the needs of a multicultural population. Over its 118-year history, Crittenton has helped more than 40,000 young mothers, teens and children in the Charlotte region create better lives for themselves and their families.

Women and adolescents at Crittenton have experienced abuse and trauma (i.e., homelessness, sexual abuse, emotional disturbance, substance and alcohol use disorder, neglect or incarcerated family members). Case management, access to health care, counseling, educational and vocational support, pregnancy prevention, substance and alcohol use disorder education and establishing healthy relationships are among the services provided by Crittenton.

Crittenton provides 24-hour residential services as well as maternal, family care and life skills training for girls and women through four programs:

  • Maternity â€“ Women receive prenatal care, counseling and parenting support while continuing their education or learning new job skills. All ages – with average age 18 -22.
  • Aftercare â€“ Women receive home visitation and support to help them maintain a stable home environment and find employment as they work to create healthy relationships and master safe parenting practices.
  • Sarah’s House – High-risk young mothers in the legal custody of the Department of Social Services who are not ready to live independently can live with their babies at Crittenton so that we can teach hands- on parenting and independent living skills that empower these young women.
  • Legacy Hall â€“ Serves adolescent females in legal custody of the Department of Social Services teaching independent living skills.
