We love the look of a many-layered bed, with pillow stacks and several textures luxuriously combined to create that cocoon of comfort that is both stylish and practical. Especially here in the QC, where you can seemingly experience an entire year’s worth of all 4 seasons within the temp ranges of a single October day.
We stopped by Bedside Manor in SouthPark to get the scoop on how to layer a beautiful bed. You cannot beat Bedside for gorgeous, luxury linens and bedding, along with pretty much everything you need to outfit your bedrooms and baths in designer style.
We start with the basics:
A beautifully upholstered bed – this one is their Cocoon ($2899 Queen).
Neutral Sheets – Matouk Bergamo in Truffle BUY HERE
While you can go with patterned sheets of course ~ and the options at Bedside Manor are amazing ~ most designers prefer a neutral or very subtle pattern for the sheets in a layered look, so that the pillows and duvet can bring print and pattern in without over-doing it.
Also, make the bed with the flat sheet wrong side up so that the pretty part shows when you fold it over the next layer…and leave plenty of room at the top for that fold over.
We add the first layer, another neutral, this matelasse quilt by John Robshaw, Running Stitch Quilt in Sand ($495-$720) BUY HERE along with our selected pillows:
King Euro Pillows – Aamil in Sand ($215 each) BUY HERE
2 Standard Shams – John Robshaw’s Taha Organic – ($90 each) BUY HERE
2 Decorative Pillows – Avery Fretwork Pillow – ($275 each) instore only
Blue Decorative Pillow – Aleesa Indigo ($215) BUY HERE
Pillow stacking tip #1 ~ Use a pair of large Euro square pillows to add height to the bed and layer in pattern or texture. Use 3 Euro squares for a king bed.
Pillow stacking tip #2 ~ Use pillow shams instead of pillowcases to give a more finished look to standard pillows. Use king–size shams + pillows for a king bed.
From here you can go straight to your Duvet Cover – we choose the John Robshaw Taha Organic Duvet Cover ($295-$400) BUY HERE
If you love a very fluffy look, then you’ll want your duvet as the top layer. You can even double up your duvet inserts for a more lifted, very fluffy style.
And for extra warmth when winter comes, layer in a warm blanket in a solid to anchor the bed, and of course a lovely throw. Look for a color pulled from your patterned pick to best complement the look.
Blanket Cover – Wicker by SDH in Oregano $504 Queen, $594 King in store
Brushed Mohair Throw – $425 BUY HERE
How much matching is too much? How many patterns should you choose? While this is obviously a matter of personal preference, most designers like to match at least two elements, like the shams & duvet here. And most do not recommend matching all the elements in one print or pattern unless in shades of a solid color....in which case texture variations are crucial.
Another look, perfect for fall and spring temps when a duvet may add too much warmth, is to layer the blanket and keep the duvet folded at the foot of the bed for easy add on access during the night.
Notice how each addition to the bed is placed to show a bit of all the layers, so you get the full visual effect.
