Broadway’s COME FROM AWAY Best Musical Winner Runs at The Belk Theater March 7 – 12

This New York Times Critics’ Pick takes you into the heart of the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

COME FROM AWAY is an uplifting musical based on real events on 9/11, when 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers (and 19 animals in cargo) were diverted and ordered to emergency land at the Gander International Airport after the attacks. Grounded for days, the “plane people” ~ the passengers and crew ~ were warmly welcomed by the small town and treated with immense hospitality. The Newfoundlanders opened up their homes, hotels, restaurants, school gyms and community centers to house and care for the stranded.

The empathetic kindness that was intrinsically showcased on a spontaneous and grand scale touched so many lives during such a dark time that the story found its way to books, documentaries, and most prominently, the Broadway musical “Come From Away”

The show, which runs without an intermission … grabs audiences out of the gate with the anthemic opening number “Welcome To The Rock” and keeps their attention, but, with a handful of f-bombs, a quick glimpse of women’s undergarments and a couple of allusions to passion along the way, it may be a tad unsuitable for young children.

Despite its age suggestion of 13+, COME FROM AWAY is a wholesome performance that delights audiences with its message of kindness in the face of adversity and community pulling together, complemented by a healthy dose of humor and engaging show tunes.
