Becky McGrath knows North Carolina. A legit ‘townie,’ she was born and raised in Chapel Hill. Her Dad, a Gastonia native, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill where he later returned to the university to work. “I spent all my winters going to watch Carolina basketball with my dad. After college, I visited Charlotte and fell in love with the place and moved here soon after,” said Becky.
At Home in SouthPark
Becky now lives with her husband Scott near Barclay Downs. Almost an empty nester with her last one heading to college next year and her rescue pup, Lilly, the mom of three is at the helm of one of the top-producing Cottingham Chalk teams.
“I have lived in a lot of neighborhoods in Charlotte and have bought and renovated several homes close to town,” said Becky. “I started in Midwood, moved to Cotswold then Myers Park, and finally SouthPark where I have lived for the past 19 years.”
Keeping It Real – Neighborhood Recommendations
With decades of personal and professional experience with Charlotte neighborhoods we can all benefit from Becky’s top picks based on what you’re looking for:
Best for Families
- SouthPark and all the neighborhoods from Barclay Downs to Highway 51; neighborhoods like Beverly Woods, Sharon Woods and Montibello offer a great place to raise kids and are still convenient to Uptown.
Best for First time Home Buyers
- Condos and townhomes: I love South End, Noda, Dilworth and the West End
- Starter homes: the area up and down Park Road is fantastic. Madison Park of course, but Colonial Village, Collins Park and Montclaire have a lot to offer, and those areas are appreciating like crazy! Huntingtowne Farms and Cameron Wood are great areas off Park Road as well.
Best for Empty Nesters
- Today’s empty nesters want to go where the action is… they want to live near breweries and restaurants so Midwood, Wesley Heights, Noda, and Dilworth are great if you want to walk to dinner or have a beer after work or after working in the yard.”
Hidden Gem Neighborhood
- Camp Greene and the West end area is very up and coming. Tons of breweries, restaurants and shops are moving into northwest Charlotte and there are a lot of great houses and neighborhoods. There are many builders who are building great little bungalows in these areas. I sold my sister a house in Camp Greene and the area has boomed with a beautiful park being built right across the street from her house.
How Do You Give Back?
Right now, I spend a lot of time on baseball. My youngest son is a baseball player coming up through Myers Park Trinity Little League as a kid and is going to play in college next year, so I support the baseball Little Leagues and I spend a lot of time and energy raising money for Myers Park High School Baseball.
Most folks do not know that CMS gives almost no money to high school sports, so every sporting team must raise their own money to support their program.
Preferred Nearby Vacay?
The Beach! I love Kiawah, Seabrook and Wild Dunes. While I am more of a beach person, but as I have gotten older, I have a new appreciation for the mountains. Asheville is amazing and there are so many charming mountain towns like Saluda near Asheville, or West Jefferson near Boone.
Favorite Spot for a Date Night or a Bite to Eat?
For a casual drop-in meal, we love to go to Foxcroft Wine Co. SouthPark or in Dilworth. They have great bites to eat and love their after-dinner dipping doughnuts. Good Food on Montford is amazing and we also love Roosters.
For Retail Therapy
There are so many great little shops in Charlotte:
- I go to Woo for makeup
- Love to go to Brass Exchange for décor and gifts
- I have bought a lot of gifts in Paper Skyscraper
- The Social Shop – I recently discovered it, and it’s great for corporate gifts
It’s more than just a ‘listing’
For buyers, the market has been challenging for the last few years, you need a good agent that is not just going to set you up on a search and hope something comes up. You want someone to really be looking out for you and advocating for your best interest.
Every buyer wants the house that is already done and ready. It helps to find a house in a great location, good bones and has a great lot but is being overlooked by other people because of paint or wallpaper.
Find a good house in the right location and take time over the course of a few years to make it your own. A house should reflect your own taste.
For sellers, hire an agent that will be honest with you and take the time to help you get the house in ‘show-ready shape’. My team spends a lot of time helping our sellers get their homes ready for market.
You will get more for your house in a shorter period, if you do the right things to get it ready for the market.
It Takes a Village
I have worked in real estate for 26 years, a few years ago I started a real estate team and have assembled the best and brightest in real estate.
We cover a large service area from Lake Norman to Union County to Fort Mill. They are all dedicated to helping their clients find great houses in Charlotte and the surrounding area.
We love to help sellers and keep a large warehouse with decorative items so we can make sure our listings present to the public beautifully. We work hard and our clients’ needs always come first!
