Rainy Day Survival Guide for Parents in Charlotte

March is Charlotte’s rainiest month and we average about 12.3 rainy days before we hit April. That means almost half the month might be rainy and parents we will need some indoor activities to keep the kids entertained and to get out of the house.

Here are 12 of Charlotte’s best indoor activities and events:

The Museum of Illusions (Uptown) is Charlotte newest museum and has over 60 interactive exhibits including the tilted room, holograms, and optical illusions. Kids of all ages are welcome though elementary ages and above will get the most out of the experience.

Superior Play Systems (Southwest CLT) sells playsets, trampolines, and basketball hoops. They recently restarted their open play sessions where kids can play on all of their equipment inside the showroom. Right now they are only open on weekdays 10-6pm.

ImaginOn (Uptown) is a free public library that also has several small play spaces for kids. Check out their calendar of events for regular storytime sessions, special events, and puppet shows.

The Children’s Theater of Charlotte (Uptown) is located inside of ImaginOn and has a variety of family-friendly shows. “The Night Diary” will be showing March 10th-26th and “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” will be April 8th – May 7th.

Discovery Place Kids (Huntersville, NC) is a children’s museum in the Discovery Place Network offering a wide variety of creative play experiences. It’s set up like a town center and kids can play make-believe through activities like a full size fire truck, ambulance, restaurant, grocery store, etc. It’s great for toddlers through early elementary ages.

Playland (Monroe) is an indoor playground that has a variety of fun play structures including tunnels, a ball pit, several slides, and a toddler area. The best part is that they offer gourmet coffee and lots of tables where parents can sit and watch their kids with a nice drink.

Sports Connection (Ballantyne) is a family fun center with a wide variety of activities including a bounce house area, arcade, laser tag, bowling, bumper cars, rock wall, and gaming center. They also have a toddler play area for children 3 and under.

Discovery Place Science (Uptown) offers a wide variety of STEM educational exhibits including an indoor rainforest, small aquarium, live shows, water play area, and a whole level of hands-on experiences that teach kids about our everyday world. Right now their special exhibit is “Top Secret: License to Spy” which features life-like sets and activities based on a James Bond-style fantasy of exotic locations and high-tech equipment.

Ninja Nation (Huntersville) features world-class ninja obstacle courses for kids in their large gym. They offer open-gym play sessions for kids 5+ and many class options for kids age 3+.

Dish It Out Pottery (S. CLT) is a pottery and painting studio that is open for walk in guests to enjoy some creative painting fun. You’ll paint your piece then leave it with them for about a week to be glazed and fired in the kilns. These make great birthday or special occasion gifts for family.

Blippi: The Wonderful World Tour (Ovens Auditorium) is coming to Charlotte on March 28th. Blippi will sing, dance and make new discoveries on stage in this fun show.

Aladdin (Belk Theater), the hit Broadway musical will be in Charlotte April 5-9th. You’ll see one of Disney’s most popular movies live on stage in this critically acclaimed show that will be great for a wide range of ages.
