Underpainting, Vinyl Lips, Balletcore, Skittle Nails, Box Bobs, Sunburn Blush & More. Spring 2023 Beauty Trends Including Some You Might Actually Use

Got you with that headline didn’t we. And yes, there are some very buzzy nicknames for the Spring 2023 Beauty Trends, most are new twists on the old and the familiar. That’s not a bad thing. New and improved versions. New and improved products and applications. It’s not like any of us are going to completely overhaul our style, appearance, or make-up drawer every six months to be on to the new trends.

We combed through the web and social media to find the top beauty trends for this spring and summer, even a few that you might actually adapt and use.

Underpainting

Makeup artist Mary Phillips of @maryphillips on IG and makeupbymaryphillips on tik tok has great demo videos to learn this ‘new’ technique, where you put contour, highlight and concealer underneath your foundation, to allow for a more natural and blended look. Great if you actually wear contour, highlight, concealer, and foundation. Great to watch even if you don’t. SEE IT HERE. I’ve tried it with just highlighter under my Jones Road What The Foundation and really liked the look.

Glowing Dewy Skin

Probably the #1 trend we saw repeatedly across all trend reports for Spring/Summer 2023. Radiant and dewy skin, achieved both by ‘from within’ glow of disciplined skin care and treatments, and a makeup choice that offers luminosity and skincare elements. Key to the No Makeup Makeup trend also hot this spring (again). We can all do this! Use tinted serums, tinted moisturizers, and tinted SPFs instead of matte foundations, even for, especially for, evening. Look for Merit, Westman Atelier, Ilia Beauty, and Saie, formulated with skincare ingredients as well as light but buildable coverage. Highlighters are balm-based and glossy vs. glittery or heavy shimmer for layering and Underpainting (see above : ) I love the entire Jones Road line, new from Bobby Brown. The person not the brand.

Sunburn Blush & Super Blush

Blush has undergone a major rebrand of late, and vibrant blushes swept practically all over the face are all over the socials. Mostly liquid or cream blush vs powder, again for the glow, although we’ve seen some awesome fluffy powder applications. Blush is replacing bronzer and contour this season, often more than one color is used, and it’s often layered, powder-over-cream or gel, for a really saturated look. It’s also MUCH closer to the under-eye or center of your face. Check this super blushed tik tok here.

For Sunburn blush, well, pretty self-explanatory, apply a blush just below your eyes, across your cheeks, and over the bridge of your nose, like where you get sunburned. Applied high on the cheeks, well above the hollows, swept along the eye sockets and across the nose, temples, forehead where the sun would naturally hit.

Balletcore

We only saw this on on BUSTLE but we love the name so much, kissing cousin to Barbiecore, without the heels and big hair drama. Pink (again) on cheeks, eyes, and lips, and big, iridescent eyes with huge lashes. With flats, wrapped cardigans, collarbones, tight chignons. Apparently we should enjoy this while it lasts, cuz people are trying to make Mermaidcore a thing.

Eyeliners

Cat eyeliners are here to stay and tik tok is a driving force. Like it is for everything beauty these days. Are you team DOE-EYES or team SIREN EYES? Two versions of liner application, best viewed in this short You Tube video here.

Doe eyes on the right, Siren on the left, nicely done by @bunnyandfawn

Or ~ are you team “this is way too much trouble, you’re lucky I put on deodorant?” Same.

Vinyl Lips

SUPER GLOSSED lips achieved with products that have been formulated to provide crazy high gloss and shine without that sticky feeling. Think lacquer lips, designed to make them look more plump and larger. The texture lasts long but is not sticky once it sets, and visually the high gloss helps your lips seem fuller. Charlotte Tilbury Latex Love and YSL do versions, but you can try it out for less than $10 with the Maybelline Super Stay Vinyl Ink at Amazon here.

The Box Bob

The ‘experts’ are predicting that hair and nails are both going to be shorter this year ~ time to shed all that extra weight and trouble I guess. The Box Bob is a refresh on the ever-popular cut, and is basically a cut super blunt to fit the exact “box” of the face, highlighting your bone structure. Cut very blunt and choppy, it has the added benefit of making your hair appear healthier and fuller, so it’s great for thin, fine hair.

Too short? Try the Italian Bob ~ longer, with just above the shoulder, mostly all one length and smooth style. Several versions of it here.

Deep Side Parts

Usually when the KardashiansJenners do stuff we take it as an automatic Nope. But the low & deep side part can be so flattering and a total change up without cutting your hair. Try it – take a refreshing break from whatever your current style, it works with ponytails, buns, bobs, long hair, short hair, mom hair & more.

Skittle Nails

Skittle nails are when you paint each nail a different but corresponding shade. That can be all pastels, all brights, all tones of a single shade, etc. New name, re-branded old trend but still fun.
