For the most part, you can think of Easter weekend as the unofficial launch of planting season in the QC. Even with our earlier Easter this year, the soil temps are a bit warmer than normal for this time due to an unseasonably mild winter. If you are still worried about a late frost, we reco you go ahead and pick out your plants now while the selection is plentiful. You can wait a week or so to plant. To us, the forecast looks pretty good, so we’re going to brave it.
The Garden Center at Blackhawk Hardware is PACKED with so many awesome veggies, annuals, and container plants right now ~ and their selection of gardening tools and materials is beyond. They really are your one-stop-shop, and not a chain; Blackhawk has been locally owned and operated for decades.

First Decide: Seeds or Plants
Blackhawk has it all for you, and we like to go with a combo. Some things are super easy to grow from seed ~ arugula, lettuces and spinach until about June when it starts really getting hot, then kale and chard plus flowers ~ zinnias, cosmos, foxgloves, rose campion, whether in a gathering of large containers, a raised veggie bed, or any section of good dirt & some sun in your garden. You can go with seed-starting or you can just sow rows of seed. Seed is so inexpensive, why worry? Try some out and see what works for you. Seeds are especially good for the heirloom and unusual varieties as they can be hard to find as plants.
How do you know how long things take to grow from seed? Check out this super-helpful chart from NC State:

Garden Planting Calendar for Annual Vegetables, Fruits, and Herbs in North Carolina
Other plants just take too long / too much trouble to grow from seed with the whole “start them indoors then transplant them“, etc. Not that it can’t be done, more power to you, but if we find something we like as a seedling, we just go on and buy it.
Tomatillos and Tons of Varieties of Peppers and Tomatoes
We spotted maybe 5-6 varieties of Thyme along with several sage types ~ we love these herbs in planters, as pretty accents, and over the edge of our raised veggie beds.
Plus several varieties of parsley. While we are team flat-leaf, some recipes insist on curly.
Everything You Need for a Healthy and Beautiful Garden
Well, at least all the ingredients are found at Blackhawk. You do have to tend it 🙂
Outside near the annuals and plants, you will find a fantastic planter and pots selection. Head inside on the ground floor back side of the building for all the things for planting, including many we’ll wager you never even knew existed.
