One of greatest musical movies of all time featuring some of the greatest vocals of all time ~ IMHO of course ~ is FUNNY GIRL. Those of us too young to have seen it in the late 60’s when it came out (which is, granted, a lot of us 🙂 ) can now enjoy the fantastic score and story in person, when the Broadway touring company brings the new reprisal to Charlotte for one week this October.
The original Broadway play launched the career and brought international fame to a young Barbra Streisand, and she went on to win an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her role in 1968 film adaptation.
This sensational Broadway revival features most of the original, iconic score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, and dazzles with classic songs “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” With an updated book from Tony award winner Harvey Fierstein and direction from Michael Mayer, the “vivacious and delightfully glitzy” (Vogue) show has been breaking box office records week after week and receiving unanimous raves on Broadway.
FUNNY GIRL
OCT 17 – 22, 2023
Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center
The bittersweet comedy is loosely based on the life and career of performer and comedienne Fanny Brice, and her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nicky Arnstein, and it just ended its run with a final performance on September 3rd. So if you missed it in NYC, your best chance to see it will be here in the QC next month.
The touring cast will feature Grammy-Award® winning singer-songwriter, Melissa Manchester as Mrs. Brice, and introduce Katerina McCrimmon as Fanny Brice.
Manchester has been an icon in the music industry since the 1970s, best known for celebrated songs such as “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” “You Should Hear How She Talks About You,” and “Through The Eyes Of Love” (Ice Castles). And in her national tour debut, McCrimmon steps into the role of Fanny Brice, on the heels of becoming a YoungArts Winner in Theater and a Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
“Fans have adored Melissa throughout her 50-year musical career, and Katerina is a star in the making who embodies the rising stardom of Fanny. We could not be more thrilled to have this dynamic and talented duo lead the Funny Girl tour,” said director and Tony® Award winner Michael Mayer.
Belk Theater features state-of-the-art equipment, production and support capabilities and can host any event, from grand opera to rock to corporate annual meetings and lectures.
The theater features a contemporary European horseshoe arrangement for an intimate atmosphere and world-class acoustics. The most distant seat is less than 135 feet from the stage.
