The “Party of the Century” was the label for Truman Capote’s epic black and white masquerade ball on November 28, 1966 at The Plaza Hotel. Capote’s Ball was a masked event, and kicked off a rage of masquerade and costume balls in the late 60s. With that as your inspiration, join The Duke Mansion on a journey back to 1966 when miniskirts were fashion forward, Star Trek had just premiered, Batman and Mission Impossible were hits, and the Beatles were playing on the radio.

What to Wear

Wear your favorite black and white outfits like the guests at The Plaza or be inspired by any 60’s glam or other spooky costume. Masks will be key. We also love the idea of full-length satin gloves, here. For him, black tie or white tie of course (no tux? rent one at Onward Reserve, so easy). For you? If you don’t have a fancy B&W gown or outfit, you can find many, many fun and cheap options on Amazon.

Or, if you haven’t already streamed it, The Black and White Ball is recreated and featured in episode 3 of Capote vs. The Swans ~ check it out on Hulu.

“The guests, as spectacular as a group has ever been as assembled for a private party in New York, were an international Who’s Who of notables. There were diplomats, politicians, scientists, painters, writers, composers, actors, producers, dress designers, social figures, tycoons and what Mr. Capote called “international types, lots of beautiful women and ravishing little things.”

And nobody seemed to be having more fun than the host.”
