How to make a DIY Pom Pom Clutch
The pom-pom trend is everywhere this summer. These fun, multi-colored, fabric orbs have been making appearances on everything from tops and handbag charms to shoes and clutches. If you’re anything like me, you’ve fallen HARD for this trend. I kind of want them on everything!
After seeing a particular clutch all over Instagram, I got to thinking that pom-poms can’t be that hard to sew onto something. So I decided to try my hand at a DIY version.
I already had a plain straw clutch so all I needed were the pom-poms, which I found at Michaels, although I’m sure Joann Fabrics or any other local craft store would have them as well. If you want to buy an inexpensive plain straw clutch, we found a couple on Amazon here (also comes in black if you like that idea better) and here.
Now this project does require knowing how to do basic sewing, although you could probably Google “How to sew a button” and learn on the fly. I’m grateful my mom taught me how to sew buttons as a kid (although she must have been trying to keep me out of her hair because when I recently thanked her for teaching me, she didn’t remember).
Back to the clutch – the first step is to choose your pattern. I’m a fan of symmetry, so I went with the basic rainbow layout, seen below.
Next, you simply thread the poms through one of the braids of the clutch (make sure the clutch has a larger weave so there’s room for a needle and thread to go through).
After attaching your first pom-pom, simply continue sewing them in the order you’ve chosen. From start to finish, this project took me about 30 minutes.
*Note: I ended up sewing the pom-poms on a little closer than how I had them laid out, so it might help to snap a picture of your layout to keep yourself on track.
This was a really fun project and I get complimented on this clutch whenever I carry it. The good thing about multi-colored pom-poms? They go with everything.
