The concept of taking my child for a visit to the museum sounds like a wonderful weekend outing; expose her to culture, give her an appreciation of modern art. Then the reality of, “don’t touch anything” “shhhh” “you’re not bored, we just got here” creeps into my mind. Enter FAMILY DAY at THE BECHTLER OF MUSEUM OF MODERN ART.Â
On Saturday, February 11th, you may drop in anytime between noon and 4:30pm with your kids for a Valentine’s Day themed FAMILY DAY. Specifically created to cater to kids’ curiousity and give them a looser environment that introduces them to art, THE BECHTLER offers hands on activities with a connection to their current exhibits.
To celebrate Valentine’s Day and engage their imaginations, children can create hand made modern art Valentine’s cards, get abstract by making torn paper collages in the style of Italo Valenti, and create sketch portraits in the style of Alberto Giacometti. Plan your visit to take advantage of the guided museum tour offered at 1pm and 3pm.
Jennifer Sudul Edwards, Ph.D., Bechtler curator and mom to two boys, is passionate about making the museum not only accessible to kids but making their experience purposeful. “Art has the power to liberate their minds and expand their ability to look at situations differently, which builds their confidence to solve problems.”
“Creating in the museum breaks down the perception of a museum being an elite space” – Bechtler Museum Curator Sudul Edwards
