What is the effect of technology on our brains, our families and our society?
Healthy Charlotte Alliance Community Health Classroom takes a look at this topic in an upcoming lunch event at Quail Hollow Club from 12:00 to 1:30 pm on Thursday, October 26, 2017. Three panel experts will examine and thoughtfully discuss how to have a healthy relationship with technology, answering questions like:
- Is it really possible to become addicted to technology?
- How much does texting affect my driving?
- At what age should children be allowed to have a phone?
- How can we help children cope with cyber bullying?
- What are technology companies doing to encourage the healthy use of technology?
- What can I do to ensure a healthier use of technology for my family and me?
The panelist speakers are:
Dr. Meredith Snapp, a board-certified neurologist with Novant Health Neurology Specialists. She graduated from medical school at The Ohio State University and completed her internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital and her neurology residency and sleep fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She is experienced in all parts of neurology. Many people do not appreciate what their nervous system does for them, until it stops working correctly. Dr. Snapp became fascinated by its function and decided to devote her career to the study and treatment of the nervous system. “I chose neurology because I find the neurologic system to be the most interesting and vital part of each of us. What my colleagues and I do every day helps our patients live better lives. I’m proud of that.”
Kathy O’Reilly, a health educator at Teen Health Connection. She is the facilitator of the Parenting the Love and Logic Way curriculum and has lectured and participated in various courses in Colorado at the Parenting the Love and Logic Way Conference. Prior to joining Teen Health Connection, Kathy worked as an educator for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Kathy holds a BS from Winston Salem State University. She is the proud mother of five children. Her interests include cultural influence in society, substance abuse prevention, music and the arts.
Melanie Hempe, a nurse, mother of four, and a retired “Video-Game Cop Mom”. She is the founder/president of Charlotte based non- profit, Families Managing Media. She has been
in your shoes refereeing game content, setting limits on screen use, and determining best ages for smartphone purchases. Through her quest to solve the screen overuse problem in her own home and save her kids from disappearing in the virtual world, she has discovered the medical facts, simple tools and practical solutions to eliminate screen conflicts in any home and is passionate about sharing this information with everyone. She enjoys any outside activity.
