CLTBests: Brunch & Beyond at Bistro La Bon

Every neighborhood in Charlotte has establishments that epitomize the ‘hood and truly reflect the vibe of the area.  In Plaza Midwood, one of those places is Bistro La Bon.

At first blush, a place called Bitro La Bon probably conjures images of a stuffy French restaurant; a place with white table cloths and waiters in tuxedos.  But as General Manager, Miguel Cabeda, pointed out to us, the restaurant name itself isn’t even actually grammatically-correct French.  That should be your first clue that this isn’t your typical Euro-fare spot.

When you walk into the restaurant, you’ll find communal tables and cozy booths with plush pillows, soft lighting and an overall eclectic, fun, feel.  No one here takes themselves too seriously, but one taste of their food will show that they don’t mess around when it comes to their menu.

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Bistro La Bon for both brunch and dinner.  Here are a few of our favorite items from those meals…

Brunch at Bistro La Bon

Sunday brunch at BLB includes a non-traditional brunch buffet as well as made-to-order items including the Eggs Benedict, Brioche French Toast and Chocolate Waffles.  The brunch buffet offerings rotate but you can expect the deliciously unexpected with options like Swedish Meatballs, Sweet Chili Chicken Rice, Curried Cauliflower, Crab Mac and Cheese, Angus Beef Brisket and Asiago Cheese Grits.  If you’re a traditionalist when if comes to brunch, you can also order a plate of eggs and bacon (but did you miss the part about Chocolate Waffles?).  Don’t forget the $3 Mimosas and $5 Bloody Marys for a little hair of the dog.

Dinner at Bistro La Bon

For dinner Bistro La Bon, once again, offers traditional and the not-so-traditional European dishes.   There is everything from the aforementioned steaks and their staple Swedish Meatballs (with traditional sauce, Ligonberries and Chive Mashed Potatoes) to the Lavender Chicken (boneless, skin-on chicken with banana bread, walnuts, red seedless grapes and curry cream) and our personal fave, the Brie Brûlée (with apricot marmalade, dried fruit compote, sliced Bartlett pear and crispy lavash).

Bistro La Bon is the kind of place you can enjoy perfectly-cooked steak and fine wine for dinner, but you can also show up in lululemon and a messy bun for a hungover brunch on Sunday.  The food is great and the atmosphere never pretentious.

As an added bonus, the menu at Bistro La Bon includes gluten-free and vegetarian options.  Another serious plus?  They have plenty of parking available in their shared lot.
