FOR FOODIES

Lexington – Distance from Charlotte: 1 hour, 10 min. (58.5 miles)

If you’ve got an appetite for BBQ, pack up and head to Lexington, just over an hour away from Charlotte. You’ll find over a dozen options for lunch and dinner on your day trip, offering plates and sandwiches of chopped and sliced ‘cue with red or white slaw. Popular stops include Speedy’s BarbecueThe Barbecue Center, Lexington Barbecue and Smokey Joe’s Barbecue. (everyone’s favorite Jimmy’s is still closed…) Don’t forget the sauce; the Lexington-style is typically made with vinegar, ketchup, sugar, salt and pepper.

Asheville – Distance from Charlotte: 2 hours, 9 minutes (130 miles)

If you believe food can heal, Cúrate is a must-stop on any Asheville trip. Literally meaning “cure yourself” in Spanish, Cúrate transport diners to Spain with authentic dishes including croquetas de pollo and jamón Ibérico in a lively tapas bar setting.

Kindred is still on our list of must-venture-to stops in Lake Norman. The chefs keep the freshest ingredients on hand, so their menu changes frequently with the seasons. Grab a seat at their old-fashioned bar or a booth with a front row seat of Davidson’s Main Street. It’s worth the drive for Kindred’s milk bread, Scallops a la Plancha and Appalachian Trout. Since it’s closed on Sundays and Mondays though, we also love….

Hello, Sailor, the new venture from Kindred owners Joe and Katy Kindred welcomes walk ins with sharable appetizers and plates, a bright and sunny interior and a lakefront patio complete with a tiki bar. The menu offers appetizers, fried seafood plates, a lobster roll served on milk bread and a whole flounder with mojo verde and the cocktail program is worthy of a trip all its own.

Banner Elk – Distance from Charlotte: 119 miles, 2 hours 12 minutes

The Gamekeeper Restaurant and Bar

Make a trip to the mountains to visit Artisanal and dine from the menu of farm-to-table dishes using local ingredients served in a converted barn. It’s worth the drive for caramelized cauliflower to share, hickory smoked pekin duck breast and wagyu sirloin. Make your OpenTable reservations here. Summer hours are Wednesday – Sunday, 5 – 9 p.m.

JUST FOR FUN

Lake Lure – Distance from Charlotte: 1 hour, 52 mins. (92.6 miles)

Come for the views, stay for the Sunday brunch. Start off your day exploring Lake Lure with Lake Lure Inn & Spa’s lavish Sunday Brunchserved 10:00 am – 2:00 pm with a build your own Body Mary Bar. Enjoy the lake’s 27 miles of shoreline with seasonal activities like boating and sailing. World-renowned cyclist George Hincapie leaned on inspiration from his travels abroad when establishing this modern, European-style hotel. Hotel Domestique is home to Restaurant 17, serving regional cuisine sourced from neighboring farms worth the drive. Day guests can also rent bicycles, go on a guided cycling tour and access a pool pass.

Cherokee – Distance from Charlotte: 3 hours, 5 minutes (165 miles)

Place your bets at Harrah’s Cherokee, the state’s only full-scale casino. Enjoy over 150,000 feet of gaming, including live games like blackjack, roulette, craps and more. No luck? You can still shop the casino’s multiple offerings.

Crowder’s Mountain – Distance from Charlotte: 57 min (31.9 mi)

A popular hiking spot for Charlotteans and visitors alike, Crowder’s Mountain has something for everyone. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure – Distance from Charlotte: 1 hour 50 min (95.9 miles)

Greenville, SC – Distance from Charlotte: 1 hour, 47 minutes (102 miles)

Greenville may have that city feel, but don’t be fooled, there’s plenty to do outdoors. Bike the Swamp Rabbit Trail and explore scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and a suspension bridge at Falls Park on the Reedy.
