One of the most frequently performed operas worldwide, La Bohème is Puccini’s 4 act opera based on the bohemian life of the Latin Quarter in Paris in the 1800s. The opera centers on the lives and struggles of two poor would-be lovers and their friends and neighbors, and is a bit like the play RENT, which drew in large parts from La Bohème. While it features the standard “opera” themes of love, death, heartbreak, and passion, La Bohème focuses on the struggles of poor and ordinary people. Its gritty realism was something new, and proved that opera didn’t have to be about monarchs, aristocrats or gods to be successful.

- Saturday, January 25 at 8 pm
Get to know the lead performers playing Rodolfo and Mimi on OC’s website ~ tenor Adam Smith has performed the role in the UK and makes his Opera Carolina debut as Rodolfo. And soprano Stefanna Kybalova has already played Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème in other countries, but makes her first US appearance in the role. Fun facts ~ he was once a hockey player and she has always wanted to be a pilot.
