One of the most frequently performed operas worldwide, La Bohème is Puccini’s 4 act opera based on the bohemian life of the Latin Quarter in Paris in the 1800s. The opera centers on the lives and struggles of two poor would-be lovers and their friends and neighbors, and is a bit like the play RENT, which drew in large parts from La Bohème. You can read the plot summary for La Bohème here.
While it features the standard “opera” themes of love, death, heartbreak, and passion, La Bohème focuses on the struggles of poor and ordinary people. Its gritty realism was something new, and proved that opera didn’t have to be about monarchs, aristocrats or gods to be successful.
There are 4 performances of La Bohème this January:
- Saturday January 18 at 8 pm
- Sunday January 19 at 2 pm
- Thursday, January 23 at 7:30 pm
- Saturday, January 25 at 8 pm
