What to Wear to the Opera

If you are going to the amazing I Dream Opera returning to Opera Carolina in April, or considering an opera next fall, we know the main questions on your mind:

  1. Is an Opera “All Singing” for The Whole Performance? Yes, at least traditionally understood as an entirely sung piece, in contrast to a musical play with songs.
  2. Will I Even Understand What They Are Singing? Yes, easy for I Dream. But there are also always English subtitles even for those performances completely in Italian.
  3. Will it sell out? Yes. Tickets are already selling at a pace.
  4. Most Importantly….What To Wear. Yes. See Below.

What to Wear to the Opera

Despite what you will see and read about the Met, there are plenty of, in fact most women at Opera Carolina performances who are not wearing gowns. There will be more gowns on opening night, and more black tie. However, while it is always ok to wear a gown to the opera or a gala, you definitely will not feel out of place in a short skirt or dressy pants.

Having said that – we strongly recommend dressing up for the opera. It’s an occasion, and you will feel more comfortable if you are spiffy. Coat and tie and a cocktail outfit ~ maybe like what you would wear to a wedding that is not black tie. This is one of those events that you actually won’t feel weird if you are over-dressed. You’ll just have a more glamorous night!

We reached out to a few of our favorite influencers to model their own style and what to wear to La Boheme, the January performance at Opera Carolina. As you can, each took her own approach to Opera style 🙂
