Beatrice (Bea) Moise is busy. As a Board-Certified cognitive specialist and parenting coach, she spends many days helping parents navigate the behavioral and academic issues that can come with autism, ADHD, and more through her company A Child Like Mine, LLC.
Other days, she’s on television giving parenting tips on shows like WCNC’s Charlotte Parenting Today. Or appearing in (or creating her own) videos and podcasts. And sometimes she writes for publications like PBS Kids, Autism Parenting Magazine and our favorite, ScoopCharlotte.com.
On top of all that, she’s a mom of two.
“Being a mom has changed how I advise parents,” says Bea, who knew from a young age that she wanted a career that would allow her to help children and give a voice to the voiceless.
Right now, she’s living that dream. And realizing another lifelong one: becoming an author. Her book “A Child Like Mine” will come out this fall.
So how did she get here? We asked her 20 questions to find out her motivations, highs, lows, advice (and her favorite tea recipe!). Read on to find out.
- As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I had a huge love for babies and wanted to become a Neonatologist, then I wanted to be a pediatrician. But I always wanted to help children and wanted to be a voice for those without one so I figured being a writer would be my way of doing that, So I have wanted to be an author since I was 10. - What was your first job?
I grew up in Orlando, which basically means my first job had to be at a theme park. I worked at SeaWorld and LOVED every minute of it. I can still give you a walkthrough of the Wild Artic Gift Shop if it’s still the same. - How many jobs have you had, and about how long have you spent at each?
This is an interesting question and I really had to think about this one. Prior to what I am currently doing, I had eight jobs and spent about two years in each. - How did you get into the business you’re in now?
I was working as an in-home behavior therapist and saw that parents needed education on what to do when bad behaviors are occurring at home. So I decided that I should be the person to do that. I started as a parent consultant and transitioned into parent coaching. I added “writer and speaker” later on when demand for more parenting information grew. - How many years has it taken you to get to where you are today?
Officially 13 years, but I like to think that this was a journey that started in grad school when I decided I wanted to help people with their mental health and behavior. I have learned and grown so much along the way. Becoming a mom has changed how I advise parents. - What’s the best advice you ever got?
Can my best advice be a quote? Honestly, I have had so many people give me such wonderful advice. However, I used to love reading poetry and I came across this one and have made it my life motto: “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” — Edward Everett Hale - What advice would YOU give?
Find the thing that makes your soul jump for joy. You may not be able to see it immediately but if it’s bringing joy to others and it brings you joy, that to me is the right and perfect path. - What’s the number one mistake you think women in business make?
Not knowing their worth — not just financial but all of it. - How do you start and/or end your workday every day?
Early morning yoga … I start with my morning stretch and meditation followed with warm water, and then tea. It sets the tone for the day I will have. I end my day with an evening stretch and warm water. It relaxes my mind. - What’s the highlight of your business?
Watching kids grow up. When I start working with a family it can be a journey or a single visit. But the ones who invite me on their parenting journey — I love seeing those children grow up and become so different from where we started. - What’s been the low point of your journey?
When parents feel like they are failing or they have failed. It’s hard to convince someone that they could have not done things differently. The past is the past and you can only learn from it, not change it. - Do you have a five-year plan for your business?
My book “A Child Like Mine” is coming in the fall of 2021. I am excited about fulfilling this lifetime dream and finally being able to educate and help more parents than I could ever do seeing clients one-on-one. - Are you able to mentor other women professionally? If so, how?
I don’t mentor directly, but I have young girls who asked me for advice on their careers. Honestly, I am still learning so I don’t necessarily feel like I can mentor anyone, but I am always open to help any way I can. - What’s the best (in-person or virtual) local networking option?
I am pretty active on social media. I have been able to connect with people all around the world. I recently did a talk that was live and being listened to in London … that was pretty awesome. I would have not been able to do that without social media. - What pandemic change in your business will you keep going forward?
I did in-home parent coaching, and I truly enjoyed it, However, COVID changed this and it was for the best. I am able to meet with more families and coordinate times that I was not able to do prior. Virtual parent coaching is so effective and I’m not turning back. - What else do you want others to know about yourself, your company or your journey?
I started this journey by going to school to become a mental health therapist. I have taken those principles and applied them to helping parents understand how to become more empowered and informed about their children, and to create a better connection. On my journey I have reignited my passion for writing … I am now a writer for some wonderful national publications and I have a book coming in the fall. I realized now that my whole journey was preparing me for this next adventure. “Author Bea” has a nice ring to it. - Where’s your favorite place to meet for a working coffee or drinks?
Napa On Providence. I love that place and the food — so good — and the atmosphere is pretty awesome. - Where’s your favorite place to go to dinner (and what do you order?)
P.F. Chang’s and my dish is the Vegetables Pad Thai. It is my favorite place to go solo (I enjoy my time alone), but if it’s with my family we love Firebirds and honestly, I can eat anything of that menu. - For workwear: Dress or pants?
It depends. I am most comfortable in pants, but sometimes I like to switch it up. You will find me mostly in dresses. - What’s your daytime drink of choice: coffee, Diet Coke, etc.?
I LOVE TEA, all flavors, but I start my day with my homemade Matcha/Tumeric/RawHoney/Soymilk tea drink. I have attempted to try others and it’s just not the same.
RECIPE:
1 teaspoon of ceremonial ground matcha
1 teaspoon of organic turmeric
2 teaspoons of raw organic honey
1 cup of organic soy milk
1/2 cup of water
Stir all dry ingredients together until you create a paste. Add warm water and warm milk and enjoy!
