Your Home Color Trends for 2021

Trends can be tough to follow; they always seem to change just when you’ve embraced one. Luckily, when it comes to color trends, paint makes it easy to stay up-to-date and change when you feel the need. Depending on how high a quality paint you choose and how much traffic your room gets, you should repaint your interior walls anywhere from every 3 years to every 7 years.

Local Color Trends

We reached out to the pros at Blackhawk Hardware for the scoop on Color & Paint trends for this year. At their Park Road Shopping Center DIY home & design mecca, some of the local paint & color choices are:

  • “We are seeing people pump the breaks on gray walls and go back towards whites, beiges and creams.”
  • “In kitchens, we are seeing a trend of two-tone cabinets, with one being a white or wood stain and the other being a more contrasting color like navy or dark gray.”
  • “In bathrooms, people are going even bolder with color choices, selecting blush pink and forest green.”
  • “For offices or sitting rooms, we are seeing many dark and moody color choices. It’s not just accent walls anymore— people are opting to paint the whole room, including the ceiling, to create a stunning jewel box.”

National Color Trends

The Home Color Trends for 2021 gravitate toward warm, comforting, solid tones enlivened with pops of color. Nowhere is this more clearly shown than in Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2021 the neutral Ultimate Grey lifted by a deep sunny yellow called Illuminating.

The union of an enduring Ultimate Grey with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination than gives us resilience and hope.”

Farrow & Ball recently released a new color palette collaboration with designer Kelly Wearstler, The California Collection, also featuring muted earthy tones highlighted by a citron yellow.

Benjamin Moore grounded their newest paint trends with the sea, offering us the chance to “Take a moment to reflect and reset; nourish the spirit with the comforting, sunbaked hues of the Color Trends 2021 palette, including Aegean Teal.”

We’re also back to earth with Dulux, a British paint company that we love to browse at for inspiration. Dulux released their 2021 Color (or Colour : ) of the Year saying Brave Ground™ is “a bolstering shade that connects back to nature and the simple things. A warm, earthy tone, it creates a feeling of stability, growth and potential; and provides a firm foundation for change and creativity in your home.” You can view Dulux’s four complementary color palettes with lots of room examples here.

It seems that everyone is looking to their paint choices as a metaphor for the two things we need most right now ~ a firm footing with little celebrations all around. What colors are you dreaming of? Let us know in the comments below!
