Beck Aesthetic Surgery, led by Dr. Joel Beck, is now offering regenerative medicine services to slow the facial aging process and is one of the first practices in the Southeast to do so.
Regenerative medicine is a relatively new medical field, focused on repairing decaying or aged tissue using your own body’s tissue that helps your body return to a state of “well-being,” Beck says, and is revolutionary because the technology allows for a more natural surgical process.
The treatment involves harvested fat stem cells from the patient’s body using liposuction, which are then resized and reinserted into the face, neck or hands.
“Rather than using bought fillers as the method for adding volume, regenerative medicine focuses on using the patient’s own tissue to not only replace lost volume, but to literally slow the aging process,” Beck says. “It requires a very analytical approach, which mirrors our overall outlook on plastic surgery.”
The benefits of injectable regenerative medicine are numerous, Beck says, and have a purpose for all age groups. “Younger patients can use the process to slow their facial aging. It even has an effect on the underlying bony changes that occur as one matures.”
“This technology has an effect on the craniofacial skeleton and is thought to slow the decaying of bone,” Beck says, “ and helps with the rejuvenation of the appearance of the face.” The procedure increases collagen and elastin in the skin, and can reverse aging of the skin due to environmental causes, he says.“This is an exciting development for plastic surgery, one in which we see great potential,” Beck adds.
Many millions of adult stem cells are found in every human, and our body uses stem cells as one way of repairing itself. Studies have illustrated that if adult stem cells are harvested and then injected at the site of diseased or damaged tissue, reconstruction of the tissue is feasible under the right circumstances, says The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
Scientists and clinicians are developing and refining their ability to prepare harvested stem cells to be injected into patients to repair diseased or damaged tissue. The practice in Matthews has obtained the FDA-approved equipment to resize the fat which is harvested from using small liposuction cannulas, Beck says. It is then passed through a device that creates three different sized fat particles, which are used in different ways.
- The largest of which will be injected into the deep fat compartments that deflate over years.
- The middle sized particle of fat gets injected into the more superficial portions of the face.
- The smallest size fat cells are injected very superficially into the dermis of the skin to improve fine lines and wrinkles and sun damage skin by increasing one’s own collagen and elastin.
Injectable tissue regeneration can be used as an adjunct to facelift, performed without facelifts for volume loss and also applied into the skin using micro-needling techniques. In addition, a compounded topical skin delivery system is mixed with one’s own regenerative cells and applied at home to the skin.
