Charlotte SHOUT! returns this April for over two weeks to celebrate art, food, music, and ideas in Uptown Charlotte.
Not to overplay the pun, but this really is news to Shout About. Go on, Shout it From the Rooftops. Uptown Charlotte will burst with energy, creativity, performance, and fun from April 1-17, 2022 when Charlotte SHOUT!, the best multi-week festival ever, returns to our fair shores.
The festival, which came to Charlotte long ago in the Before Times of spring of 2019, is one of our all time favorite experiences in the QC. It is a feast for all the senses and all ages, serving up soulful music, delicious food, playful installations, inspiring performances, and bold ideas. This year’s festival is presented by Atrium Health and Bank of America, and is produced by Charlotte Center City Partners.
Charlotte SHOUT! will feature nearly 200 installations, performances, events, and activations. Nearly all of the events are outdoors, free, and open to the public without tickets.
“After two hard years, we are so excited to bring SHOUT! back to Uptown,” said Robert Krumbine, chief creative officer at Charlotte Center City Partners. “This is a unique opportunity to come back together, explore our city, and experience the extraordinary talents of people from around the corner and around the world.”
Highlights of Charlotte SHOUT! 2022 are:
Art installations at Levine Avenue of the Arts, The Green, Romare Bearden Park, and on multiple blocks of Tryon Street
- Easter Eggs on Parade – 12 giant eggs in Romare Bearden decorated by 12 different local artists. Also at Romare Bearden, SNAILS artist Meredith Connelly, where 300 glowing Snails will inhabit the park for the 17 days of the festival.
- Impressions, a colorful interactive life-size impression box by artist Hilary Siber Edwards. An aluminum framed clear plastic “box” will house a life-size version of this same childhood toy.
- Los Trompos from artists Hector Esrawe, Ignacio Cadena at the Levine Center for the Arts, featuring eight larger-than-life, three-dimensional spinning tops in a variety of colors and shapes. The colorful surfaces of each top are created in part by fabric woven in a traditional Mexican style.
- Mi Casa, Your Casa at The Green, also from artists Esrawe & Cadena featuring a series of three-dimensional red frames that illustrate the warmth, comfort, and safety of our homes and are inspired by the lively street markets, the mercados, of Latin America.
- Monuments by Craig Walsh, a nighttime exhibition as Craig Walsh projects portraits on the grand trees of Settler’s Cemetery. Turning public art on its head and fusing the human face with trees, witness a new interpretation of the memorial statue.
- The return of “Impulse,” (the Seesaws) an internationally renowned public art display of giant, light-up seesaws to Tryon Street. Impulse is an interactive work comprising a series of 15 seesaws with light and sound that change when in motion. The seesaws form units of light and sound that can be activated by the public to create an ever-changing composition.
SHOUT! will also feature daily, nightly, and weekly activities including:
- An ideas conference curated by The Charlotte Center for the Humanities and Civic Imagination, featuring panel discussions with some of our community’s brightest minds
- Musical performances including: William Close & the Earth Harp Collective; Indie Fest, an immersive music and light show; and Battle Jam, an R&B music competition celebrating Charlotte’s longstanding Black culture and history
- Programming at a showcase stage at Victoria Yards on East 7th Street
- The Charlotte StrEATs Festival, celebrating chefs from neighborhoods across the city, curated by Unpretentious Palate
