An Evening of Art with Jimmie Johnson and E.V. Day’ May 10 6-8 pm at Mint Museum Uptown

The Mint Museum will welcome NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and New York-based artist E.V. Day for “An Evening of Art.” Johnson commissioned Day to create the sculpture Daytona Vortex using the fire suit he wore at his 2006 Daytona 500 win. Day’s works are known for gravity-defying suspension techniques that reconceptualize recognizable objects, including sequin evening gowns and silk bridal dresses in her Exploding Couture series. Daytona Vortex uses the deconstructed fire suit, monofilament, and hardware with a mirrored stainless-steel base to create a sculpture that stands 12 feet tall and explodes with bold forms and color to generate notions of speed, technology, and celebratory confetti.

Hear from Johnson and Day about how they met, and the inspiration and meaning of Daytona Vortex. After the talk, visitors are invited to join Johnson and Day in the Level 3 Gorelick Galleries to see the sculpture that is part of the exhibition Continuing Conversations. The event is free, but space is limited. Advanced reservations can be made online at mintmuseum.org/events
