35th Street (NoDa)
REALTOR® Heather Flohr declares there’s nothing quite like 35th street in Charlotte. Located in NoDa, it is a quintessential treelined wonder, with quirk and character that is at home only in Charlotte.
Nothing makes a neighborhood like neighbors, Heather says “There are always people out and about enjoying being outside and in motion.”
Halloween fan? You better be ready to bring it. “The event is taken very seriously in NoDa; 35th St. is shutdown on Halloween night, and people come out in droves. You will see some of the best, most creative costumes out there so you don’t want to miss it.”
35th Street is accessible to much of the retail and dining action that takes place in NoDa, but if green space and parks are your thing, the David Flohr Neighborhood Park truly makes this street a gem.
Renamed in the memory of Heather’s son who was lovingly referred to as the ‘Mayor Of NoDa’ has something for everyone from the littles who need to get out the wiggles, to teens to shoot hoops, and those who just want to relax.
With no two homes alike on the street, Heather says “Everyone puts their personal spin on their home. You could drive down 35th every day and it never fails, you will notice something you haven’t before. It’s eclectic. It’s fun. The amazing energy is palpable.”
Chatham Avenue (Plaza Midwood)
Chatham Avenue is nestled in the heart of Plaza Midwood and has all the charm you could ever want.
The best of both worlds REALTOR® Jane Grosse says “You can experience a very private street at one end or be close to enjoy the bustle of Central Avenue at the other.”
The sidewalk-lined street is home to many 1940-50s-era ranches, cottages and bungalows, and newer larger craftsman-style construction with welcoming porches. “When homes come on the market, they go quickly. Occasionally you’ll find new construction or a cottage to renovate,” says Jane.
Ideally located to Uptown but also with easy-to-access local restaurants, coffee shops, markets, parks, and local entertainment, the street is hard to beat.
But, Jane says “What really makes this street special is the friendliness of neighbors, during the Holidays and impromptu get-togethers, and renowned ‘welcome packages’ that tend to include gift cards for neighborhood favorites, it’s a gem of a street that says ‘Welcome Home’. Neighboring Ivey Drive is a close second for Jane for many of the same reasons.
Walnut Avenue & N. Poplar
Because sometimes it’s in everyone’s best interests not to play favorites, REALTOR®, Holly Webster’s gems are Walnut Avenue which runs through Wesley Heights into Seversville in the West End, and N. Poplar in Fourth Ward.
Walnut Avenue is a beautiful mix of homes from the 1920s through to those currently undergoing renovations. The Wesley Heights Historic District provides guidelines and inspiration for keeping homes period appropriate.
Holly says “Location wise, Walnut Ave. has access to the Stewart Creek Greenway, is a straight shot to Uptown, and a quick walk to Town Brewing, Rhino Market and Pinky’s Westside.”
Walnut Ave. packs a big punch for one street; in the spring the cherry blossoms in front of some of the homes may save you a trip to view the ones in D.C., “It is a street people tend to move to and stay on for a very long time,” says Holly.
N. Poplar in Fourth Ward is arguably one of Charlotte’s most unique streets. Some homes date back to the mid-late 1800s including the Lyles-Sims home which is a modified Queen Anne style with a wraparound front porch and the original front door from 1867!
“I love this street because it offers a unique opportunity to live among Charlotte’s history, while still seeing skyscrapers just blocks away. It’s a very unique setting in our bustling metropolis,” says Holly.
The Friends of Fourth Ward have a self-guided tour you can take of the area. Hollys recommends being hopeful, “A home for sale on N. Poplar is incredibly rare, but occasionally they do pop up!”
