There are myriad ways to style your hair for your wedding, and as many considerations when choosing. For my own wedding, I wanted my hair up and out of the way – I didn’t want to have to look at a hairbrush! Whether you choose a soft natural look or crave a more intricate style, we have some inspiration for you here. And we reached out to Modern Salon and Spa for the scoop on what Charlotte brides are requesting this spring as well.
Updos have always had a fancy vibe. Swept up hair shows off the neckline of a gown (or your bare shoulders in strapless) and highlights your necklace and earrings. Structured updos have fallen a bit out of favor, and Kuki Acevedo-Cooper from Modern Salon and Spa confirmed that the stylized updo has not been much on her radar lately. However, the updo can still be elegant, striking, and perfect for a more retro ensemble:
Looser, wavy styles seem to have eclipsed structured ‘dos. Kuki tells us that at Modern Salon and Spa, they’re doing low chignons with “swoopy bangs” for the more polished bride. I was actually so excited to find the image on the right in my googling – I had the same picture cut out of a magazine for myself years ago! I love the gardenia in her hair (made of leather, if memory serves), but today we’re concentrating on style – you can link here for an recent post dedicated to veils and headpieces.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a hair post if we didn’t talk about braids. Hugely popular with celebrities and fashionistas, and boosted by “Katniss†and The Hunger Games. Modern Salon’s Kuki Acevedo-Cooper confirms that braids “are huge for the boho chic fashionista” and that she finds them a great addition for a loose style. Some pretty examples:
If you’re just not a “hair up†kinda gal, don’t fret. The trend for brides is definitely for loose, flowing waves – much like we saw on the red carpet this year. Modern is doing lots of texture and movement with very loose and messy, beachy waves and curls these days. Long or short, loose flowing hair can work with even the most formal wedding and the “half-back” remains a popular way to combine loose waves with a more structure look.
Many people combine a hair and makeup trial with a portrait session a few weeks (or months) prior to the wedding. Even if you’re not having photos taken, a trial is always wise for working out the kinks and making sure that you’re getting the look you want. Bring pictures of your dress or your dream ‘do or both. Stylists are visual creatures, and bringing photos helps ensure that your vision become reality. The important thing to remember is not to change yourself to fit the mold of the event – make the event (and your look) yours. If you just never wear your hair up, then don’t! Find a stylist who understands you, and find a look that makes you feel awesome but still like yourself.
