Believe it or not, Savannah’s not all ghost tours and girl scouts. The quaint Georgian town is as charming and beautiful as it is vibrant. With yesteryear appeal and a cultural pulse, it’s a must-visit destination for any Charlottean looking for a quick getaway. The drive is under four hours- and well worth it- for the beauty awaiting down South. Here are just a few dining and shopping discoveries I made during my short stay in historic downtown. But while you’re there, make sure to take in some of the outdoor sights and sounds (without the price tag) via moss laden Forsyth Park, breathtaking original architecture and of course the beautiful Savannah River.
1. Perc Coffee: Before you dive into the shopping and dining scene, start your morning with a cup of Joe from local roaster, Perc Coffee. I had the chance to visit the tasting room and try out a pour over, a true crop-to-cup experience. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or just plain curious, I recommend doing the same. If your itinerary doesn’t leave room to stop by and talk with the roasters, you’ll most likely get a taste for Perc at one of their many local retailers in town from quirky coffee shop, The Coffee Fox to gourmet bistro, B. Matthews Eatery. 2424 De Soto Ave
2. B. Matthews Eatery: Speaking of B. Matthews, I enjoyed a delicious brunch at the upscale breakfast/lunch/dinner bistro. The offerings are New-American inspired and the décor is casual chic. For brunch, I suggest the Crab Benedict but the Shrimp & Grits, Fried Duck and Waffle, and Quiche of the Day sound like amazing options too. It’s no wonder the eatery is recommended by Savannah locals. Call ahead for reservations and try to go on a night when you’ll catch some live local music. 325 E. Bay Street
3. The Paris market & Brocante: Once you’re fueled, start your shopping escapades at a one-of-a-kind Parisian boutique. Score everything from a unique coffee table book or embroidered throw pillow to vintage jewelry and gorgeous home furnishings (i.e. chandeliers, bed frames, coffee tables and artwork) that you’ll be stuffing into your car or shipping home. The down-side to this one is that you’ll want everything. 36 W. Broughton St
4. Arc: This contemporary men and women’s clothing boutique is a designer- driven venue that focuses on old fashioned quality and craftsmanship. The space, an original Savannah mercantile from the 1800s, fosters a seamless mixture of both vintage and modern. The shop is aesthetically beautiful and well curated, carrying a tasteful array of casual clothing staples. 320 W. Broughton St
5. Savannah Bee Company: Take a break from trying on and treat yourself to a little tasting at Savannah Bee Company. The quirky shop, devoted to all things bee, is the place to find fine honeys- from cheese and tea honey to Tupelo and Charleston varieties- as well as beeswax body care and more. I had my first bite of real honeycomb, paired with cheese, during my pop inside. 104 W. Broughton St
6. Villa Savannah: This is a one-for-all shopping spot. It’s great for a girls trip adventure as it has everything from affordable dresses and jewelry to home decor finds like trendy animal head wall accents. It’s also the place to go if you’re seeking a gift. 109 W. Broughton St.
7. Marc by Marc Jacobs: With only two locations in the Southeast (the other one is in Bal Harbour), it’s inevitable that you’ll want to pop in to pay Marc a visit. Of course you’ll be tempted to splurge (you’re on vacation, remember?)Â but it’s a great window shopping locale too. Believe me, you won’t be able to walk by the ultra enticing storefront without peeking in. 322 West Broughton Street
8. Back in the Day Bakery: Time to refuel? Grab a quick savory or sweet bite like a pesto panini or red velvet cupcake at this tucked away bakery. You may just decide to relax here for a bit in the vintage inspired interior. Feast your eyes on incredible pastry items or the adorable retro decor. There’s even a marshmallow embellished chandelier. Whimsical and wonderful! 2403 Bull Street
9. Sylvester & Co.: Best described as a contemporary general store, the ultra modern boutique is filled with home goods, giftables, grooming care and more . A minimalists dream store! Not to mention people rave about the legendary in-store sweet shop known for its “dreamy coffee” and cookies. Look familiar? The store is originally a Sag Harbor, NY staple so if you’re a Northerner looking for the comforts of home, this is your chance to visit the store down South. 205 West Broughton Street
10. The Sparetime: Is it 5 o’clock yet? Time for a cocktail anyway. You probably know that Savannah has an open container policy, which means you can have a drink to-go, and take in the sights while you sip. But this is a place you’ll want to stick around to enjoy craft cocktails in a very unique bar atmosphere. Located on a corner storefront it’s a great little place to people watch and enjoy the vibrant sights of savannah nightlife. The bar has an artsy, eclectic feel and kicks it old school, playing only vinyl records all afternoon and evening. As for libations, I suggest the Zippah- a delightful concoction of Leopold’s Gin, Suze, Lemon, Grapefruit, simple syrup and absinthe. While you’re there, order a dozen oysters and a tapenade plate and you’ll be well on your way to an enjoyable evening.
11. Lulu’s Chocolate Bar: Okay, so if there is one place you visit on this list, make it Lulu’s. This dessert is bound to make all of your sweet tooth dreams come true. Whether you stop by for an afternoon sip or a late night after dinner drink, you have to put this on your itinerary. The Key Lime Pie martini is my personal favorite– yes, it’s as good as it sounds. But your options are endless- from Peanut Butter Cup to Raspberry Espresso- with over 20 flavors to choose from. Pair it with homemade cheesecake or handmade truffles to top it off. Charming atmosphere and wonderful dessert divas who are happy to craft up any delectable you choose. 42 MLK Jr. Blvd
12. Leoci’s Trattoria: End your Savannah adventure with a bang at a taste bud inspiring Italian eatery. The rustic chic atmosphere and gourmet food is the perfect duo for a wonderful dinner. Sit indoors or on the screened in patio for a touch of European ambiance. Must try’s include the mussels, handmade truffle oil pasta, and of course, the to-die-for bread. Enjoy feasting local? You’re in luck as most of their ingredients are sourced locally. End your night, and weekend, with a bottle or red of pitcher of sangria and say so long to a beautiful weekend getaway! 606 Abercorn St.
