6 healthy snacks for the beach or pool

Whether you are playing with the kids, running and biking outside more, or even just lounging in the sunshine this summer, for some reason being outdoors works up an appetite.  But eating salty, greasy, or heavy snacks can cause bloating and discomfort, and no one wants even the tiniest additional water weight to go with a tan.  And it’s easy to let healthy meal options and schedules slack off for your family during vacation.

Here are 6 beach or pool friendly snacks that will satisfy your hunger,  keep you looking bathing suit ready, and your family’s nutrition a priority.

1.  Granola bars

Granola bars are an easy convenient snack, but most store bought varieties contain lots of added sugar.  Make your own, such as these banana walnut granola bars, to ensure that the ingredients are on the healthier side.

2.  Apple slices with peanut butter dip

The fiber in the apples and protein and fat in the peanut butter dip will keep you feeling full, so you won’t be as tempted to overeat or snack on unhealthy foods.

3. Trail mix

Like granola bars, most of the trail mix that you can buy in a store contains far too much sugar.  Follow these healthy trail mix recipes instead.  They include nutritious ingredients like goji berries, dried fruits, almonds, and seeds.

4.  Kale chips

Kale chips are an excellent substitute for processed potato chips, and they are so simple to make at home.

5.  Fruit dip

You can make a healthy fruit dip by mixing 1 cup of fat free plain Greek Yogurt, 1/4 cup honey, 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. It tastes great when paired with sliced apples, watermelon, or frozen grapes.

6.  Veggies and hummus

Veggies dipped in hummus are another fiber-filled and protein rich snack, and hummus doesn’t have to be boring.  Experiment with different flavors by making your own homemade hummus.
